shallowness2.21 The Girl Next Door
Overall, this was funny. Possibly this was because I watched it when feeling quite tired, although Mindy chucking the spider and cup out of the window was legitimately funny. I like her around the unimpressed cop (it’s the base material for a zany romcom) even as Danny is maybe trying to win her back or something by way of New York property. Although her moving in next door was never going to be a good idea...
I am pleased that Peter had a date with a smart lady who was rightly unimpressed with his sexist nonsense and smacked him down by proxy. WHY DID SHE GIVE HIM A SECOND CHANCE? He’s only tolerable when he realises Mindy’s in the dumps (over Danny.) She heard him compare women to meat! No, Dr Lauren, no.
Er, I actually was trying to work out who the presenter from Swansea with a footballing brother could be, but given the made-up names and the general British fail with Jeremy, they probably made it up.
Well done, Mindy for not putting up with Danny’s nonsense, at least. This is character growth!
2.22 Danny and Mindy
Nearly all the Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks clichés (no volcanos) – actually, it was a Meg Ryan tribute, I suppose. And that’s not my especial favourite part of RomComLand.
I was churlish enough to enjoy watching Danny realise that he dug himself a deep hole. But standing her up at the Empire State Building? Oh dear.
Bringing up Morgan/Tamra would work if it had been more of a thing throughout the season, and everyone’s discovery that Danny and Mindy secretly dated was underplayed – I mean, there was loads more mileage in Morgan, Jeremy and Betsey finding out!
However, Charlie was funny – I never thought Mindy would do his heart too much harm. Shame we didn’t see his daughter’s response to her dad dating her gynaecologist.
Although I laughed at the skewering of The Dash – Mindy’s wheezing! - and although this delivered on the romcom vibe that I thought I wanted with A1 music choices...I was a wee bit underwhelmed. The Mindy/Danny stuff that I enjoyed was just them hanging out – and I don’t mean in the Montage of Danny’s Guilt (although all Mindy’s outfits in said montage were better than the pink tie thing she wore at the end of the episode.) I suppose my slightly mixed feelings for this finale epitomise my feelings for season 2.
