Stricty Results

Given that I was all ‘nobody puts Aliona in the corner’ it was fitting that Louis turned up, and although mostly his hip action was non-existent, there were some fun bits. (Poor Tristan got the grimmest colours.)

Yay to the ladies being through!

Why Paloma Faith? I think she sang more in tune than she did on the BBC Music Awards, but still. I would much have preferred the usual ‘let’s terrorise the celebs with a proper showdance’ showdance. Ugh, showdance. After last year’s showdance of showdances, I’m revising expectations furiously.

Simon’s shocked reaction was brilliant, and in its minimalism, made up for last week’s floor collapse.

Perhaps the most interesting thing was the choice of dance that they’d made – neither celeb (if they really made the choice) thinking tactically. Both had more dance content for Len in the ballroom, I think. Jake went for the one with his lowest score where he’d got the hips wrong (a message that hadn’t reached Tess) and Mark went for the one to prove his support for Karen, I presume.

And to my own shock – this rumba was something special – I wanted Mark to go through, even though he still gabbles annoyingly. On performance versus artistry, I’d support artistry, because that suggests someone becoming an expressive dancer, rather than depending on acting facility. And Mark had a better week, while Jake had a disappointing one, from the barely there effort he put into the VTs to the dances. So, despite myself, I felt like that was the right call.

Karen’s emotional meltdown was great, but getting to see Kevin’s was not. Show, we need to talk about Kevin. This is not Strictly Come Kevin. As he tried to say when Claudia revealed that he’s never been in the dance-off, it is about Frankie as much as him. Or it should be. I know pro popularity is a huge factor on the show, but I have not loved Kevin from Clifton as much as the show has done this year – aren’t his celebrations de trop?
