Before finding out what this episode was called, I was following the accents and calling her ‘Emily’. Oops.
So, that moment, early on, when ALL of Emilie’s followers’ heads snapped in our lads’ direction, I thought ‘oh no, this is going to be a cheesy episode’. But it wasn’t quite. My main impression was of things rushing ahead, some of them a little too fast for me.
But by the time that she saw Aramis and Anne’s clinch, I really felt Constance needed a hug. Before that, I was very happy to see Constance and Anne doing stuff together: Anne trusting Constance with (some of) her confidences and Anne having her back. Like Aramis said, reaching out to Emilie was foolish, but we got to see Anne’s desperation at her lack of status with the besotted King and worry for her fellow Spaniards and the half-Spanish Dauphin.
I’ve decided to refer to the baby – who was so cute – as Nameless.
Still, palace security is lax. Even after Constance demonstrated how easy it was to carry out babynapping. Aramis is also right on that.
My favourite scene was in the pub, where Constance poured out her concerns (at that point) to D’Artagnan. I got to roll my eyes at him for thinking Milady would come a-cropper. She may, but if the boy hasn’t realised that she’s a survivor, he’s a twit, and there was a sense of ‘I told you so’ as she killed their charge without their knowing.
Alas, Spanish ambassador, Rochefort picks better assassins than you.
But back to the scene, D’Artagnan and Constance were of course adorable in their Just Friending, but then for Athos to have overheard and the way Burke and Pasqualino played the ensuing dialogue was great.
Also, good to tie in Athos’s knowledge of cold turkey with the A-plot. Aramis’s religiosity worked less well, seeing as he’s working his way through the ladies. Poor governess! Anne as Anne and not so much Queen Anne is catnip for him, though.
But to my surprise there was more of a charge for me between Milady and Athos, as she made him face the truth that he’ll always love her. She was pushed into a horrible position, and I wonder if Rochefort will be able to resist using her again – although that would be a mistake. I think she’s already biding her time to get her revenge on him, and a part of me hopes she does. But even though she enjoyed killing her target so easily, it was the other week, when she killed that woman for her dress that was worse.
Porthos’s plot line got moved forward a little more. Oh, Treville, he deserves better than this.
They had set up Treville being in a precarious enough position that Rochefort managed to believably push him out here. The moment where Milady was speaking sense and trying to protect Treville was priceless. And of course, King Louis patronised and ignored her, and she’d pushed out Anne who might have influenced him a little more. But Treville has partly made his own bed.
I was sad that the hot Spanish guy was killed almost immediately.
And finally, let’s get to Emilie. Good mother-daughter casting. I was amused that they lampshaded the Jean of Arc wannabe vibe. I did feel they lost track of things sometimes with Emilie. At one point she was saying that Aramis was going to betray her, and she very quickly seemed to realise his loyalty didn’t lie with her, but she turned around and trusted him repeatedly. Why? Was it the charm? But he wasn’t really turning it on towards her.
They’ve used that bridge near the camp quite a few times, I’m sure.
We saw much more of the palace (another GORGEOUS ceiling to enjoy) in this episode.
Oh, and I think that doctor may be a little sweet on Constance.
