The Mentalist 7.6 Green Lights
Dylan Baker on Simon Baker’s show! I hope they addressed each other as Mr Baker at all times.
Lisbon trying to keep a birthday secret from Jane was the third most important strand and thing on Jane’s mind of the episode, but still the cutest, with all due apologies to Wylie’s crush and his abject failure to ask Vega out on a date.
So, Vega’s first name is Michelle. And Wylie is now interrogating people, because...? I would be whinging about the lack of subtitles for the Spanish, but it became a plot point. (Maybe he could ask her out in Spanish?)
At last, Dennis told Uncle Jane about his blackmail problem. And of course, Jane wouldn’t blink at Abbott taking it on himself to kill someone – a nice bit of retcon for Abbott being willing to take Jane on his team, actually.
The scene between Jane and Vega was a bit of him playing her, but the awareness that the father of a dead daughter was talking to the daughter of a dead father was nice.
Lots of nice character moments, even if the whole was played out in a rather low-key way. I mean, I’m not entirely sure if Rio Bravo and the blackmail are entirely out of the way.
Lisbon’s gift was a callback to the CBI days!!! I am a bad viewer/shipper/fan in that I don’t remember how the mug broke, but the symbolism of Lisbon keeping all the pieces and fixing it is irresistible. I suspect it isn’t Jane not figuring it out as much as him making a conscious decision not to try to and to enjoy being surprised, which is his gesture towards working at the relationship, right? That’s delightful (although guys, the kissing was basically pecks.)
Wishlist for what time is left to the show
1, Kissing in the lift. It’s not the CBI lift, but it’ll do
2, Jane being ready to take off the wedding ring – if the end involves Lisbon leaving the FBI with him, it has to be a two-way gesture street
3, The Lisbon family OR Jane’s carny past OR both
4, Van Pelt and Rigsby, maybe in a return to California
5, Any trope they’ve failed to do
B99 2.10 The Pontiac Bandit Returns
Thumbs up (although a part of me thinks this could all be a dream a dying Jake is having after the end of the last episode). Doug Judy is a good name, and the character played off Jake and Rosa well. Lots of laughs from setting the Christmas tree on fire to Hitchcock’s bleeding hand. And Boyle managing to be more inappropriate than Gina at times – that was impressive! Meanwhile, Terry spoke for us all about Santiago’s stalkerific/adorable Christmas gift. I loved that the last moment of the ep was Rosa’s.
