I’m glad you’re better, Alfred, but in a few years’ time, you may be regretting the lessons you’ve given young Bruce here.
The focus is still on the least interesting aspects of the show – fancy Jim reacting the way he did to Flass being released and promoted (because of Bullock), Captain. Fancy that. I was amused by Bullock being clearly gutted that his partner had found another Harvey to be stupid with.
Even despite the body horror (and what an Elfmanesque flourish at the reveal of the office manager), Fish’s negotiations upstairs and orders downstairs were more interesting than the investigation – what was even more interesting was the direct parallel between Alfred and Fish.
Better yet (the best) was Selina dropping by to see Bruce – er Alfred. Everything about their interaction made my heart swell – the abrupt hug and sympathy, Bruce’s trust in Selina despite her letting him down, partly because there’s no-one else, partly because he wants to see the best in her, and her trying to protect him, which he saw as not helping. Er, how does Bruce know how to get in touch with her?
And then there was blah-blah-blah less interesting stuff for the rest of the episode. Penguin reverted to type. The echo of Fish making Lisa kill someone was ringing a little loudly with him making the caretaker couple turn on each other until Penguin revealed his one shell.
Jim keeping Loeb’s secret, apart from wanting leverage on the Commissioner, could be seen as doing Miriam a kindness. Where she was was better (if not for the starlings of Gotham) than Arkham.
But I do love the look of the show, even if I am so not involved in whatever Jim is chasing that I’m consciously noticing it. The use of colour is always striking.
1.19 Beasts of Prey
I would have been surprised at Jim’s perceptiveness that Bruce was and had been lying about Alfred’s attacker, but Bruce was being really bad at it.
Fish is still fun and full of gumption.
Jim’s ego is stroked enough for him to take on a case involving a MONSTER. Got it.
The flashbacks were a bit surprising. Is Jim psychic now?
I found Bruce using Yellow Pages hugely endearing. I did enjoy Penguin waddling past his future nemesis all-unknowing, but the line about destiny that followed was too much.
Nasty serial killer is nasty (but his ideal fantasy isn’t so far from the old-fashioned style of romances shown on this show.) GOT IT.
So that’s how Bruce knew to find Selina!?
Yay, Selina doing gymnastics! Which Bruce didn’t see! Aww. They were adorable. As to him not understanding ‘shooting gallery’, if that were all Alfred had said, would be credible, but sheltered Bruce may be, but stupid he’s not, and Alfred hadn’t been subtle about Reggie’s need for drugs. Anyway, the end of it was Selina looking after Bruce and helping him out (I would love Ivy and Babs teasing her for visiting the hospital and worrying about him).
‘Decent looking’ does Milo Ventemiglia an injustice, Bullock.
‘The Ogre’ seems like a stupid name. Anyway, I can’t say I cared much as Jim learned his ego had been stroked and he’d been set up by Loeb, meaning Lee was potentially bait and unleashing McKenzie’s growly voice.
Gordon can’t deploy the finger like Fish does, though.
Never mind all that, though, I’m all: SELINA. She killed that man so that Bruce wouldn’t have to! That’s major. Major for her – for them (and for who he’ll become). But mainly her. And they were kids, however smart, streetwise or driven, in the seediest of places, however much Bruce was getting to act (and boss Selina around) because his Alfred got stabbed. But this was a pro and a druggie – got the feeling Selina really doesn’t like drug addicts. And even though they haven’t got much innocence, it’s been torn from them.

I really wish this show were Bruce and Selina: the Early Years, with occasional appearances by Penguin and Fish. And Bruce and Selina’s mansionmates and squatmates respectively.
