Finale! A lot of the episode was exciting – watching the show that we’d seen the build-up to in the last episode air. The use of the stopwatch was effective given the content. For me, the political was more exciting than the personal. Ruth being involved in a plot to assassinate Nasser was explosive, but it never went anywhere beyond making Lord Elms so disgusted with the government that he was willing to call them on it in public. Still, I never expected much of the conspiracy.
But oh boy, was the ending flatulent. I suspected Clarence to be the mole...and he was. I chuckled at Clarence calling Freddy ‘Stupid, stupid, stupid’, which,...yeah. Why on earth put him on the Bright Stone list? Well, he’d surmised
that there was no line you could set in the sand that Freddy wouldn’t cross, except he misread that. And how many ego boosts did Freddy get in the midst of everything?
But then the ep was really a culmination of what had come before in quality as well as content, so I don't know why I bothered with expectations. For me, a key moment was Bel and Hector faffing about their appearance in the opening montage whereas everyone else was doing their work. Well, his appearance is part of his work and maybe, to a lesser extent, so was hers. But still, Bel could and should have been more awesome and the writer's blinkers about what she thought she was writing and what she was writing frustrated me as has been the case since the first episode. LIX WAS STILL AWESOME, even though she had less screentime. I was expecting more Bel/Freddy at the end. Maybe it was an attempt to keep things open for another series (where exactly is Freddy going to air his revelation about Soviet Spy!Clarence?) but I’m doubtful that it’ll get recommissioned. Now a spin-off with flashbacks to Lix’s time as a foreign correspondent – yes, please.
