Nashville 3.8 You’re Looking at Country

Faux CMAs. Rayna, Luke, Will and Layla’s tensions were set up for the night, but who cares?
As if meeting Avery’s folks at the award while being painfully aware she just has the one nom wasn’t enough, we were (not so) subtly reminded that this time last year, Juliette’s mother killed herself. Fun night ahead for her then.
Meanwhile, the fact that Kylie’s parents aren’t that bothered about him makes me feel really sorry for Micah, although Gunnar clearly isn’t recognising how much pressure filling in as a mother figure is for Zoe – who dared to go for a colour (gasp) in her choice of gown. It really suited her. I thought Rayna was overdressed, Juliette’s black was funereal and Layla looked too much like Zooey Deschanel.
I don’t really believe, based on what we’ve seen, that Kylie would dump Micah on Gunnar. I think we needed to see more of the two months where the father and son developed their relationship, Kylie saw and got used to that and of her flaking/putting her boyfriend first. As it is, it’s just a Plot Development.
It was nice to see someone watch the CMAs in their PJs in Scarlett, and Claire Bowen dialled up the winsomeness, being willing to pull faces and bouncing off Uncle Grumpy.
The amusing: Layla lecturing on the definition of ‘irony’, Teddy saying he’s not an idiot, Rayna winning all the awards and thanking the men who weren’t Luke for their help (Liam was pretty, wasn’t he?). This was offset by new, upsetting flashbacks for Juliette. At least the intro to Avery’s parents was civilised in view of all the cameras. Was that the time or place for a first meeting? No. And of course she clung to him.
‘Really sweet’, she is not, Avery’s mother, but you may discover that later.
Yay! After all the needling that Deacon got (and deserved) he raised how much Gunnar the songwriter owes to Scarlett. I was glad they used this chance of Scarlett-the-viewer to delve into her feelings about her career.
Micah’s nine and a half, not five. Okay, Gunnar had just been definitely informed that Micah was his responsibility and seen Zoe talk to Jeff Fordham (boo! hiss!) but he got into a flap far too quickly. I find myself more on her side than not.
Ouch, Avery’s father was nasty – nasty enough that Avery should have gone after Juliette straight away, even if he didn’t know she was having flashbacks. And then in the dressing room scene, his own words condemned him. Awww, these two, facing up to their impending parenthood (which, I DO GET, Gunnar and, by extension, Zoe, didn’t get a chance to do).
So Avery has a sister, huh? Good for him for standing up to his father and giving Juliette the pep talk. (Of course she peeked, even though she didn’t want to look in the last ep.) The hand-holding made me grin.
I loved the Claybourne-O’Connor celebrations at Rayna’s final win, the Rayna-Juliette moment and how gracious Rayna’s speech was, considering.
And Juliette tried to pull the Demelza manoeuvre – in fairness, I can believe she couldn’t get out of that dress without help, which I never did with Demelza, although it was totally also a move, and Avery’s gestures said much.
While I don’t think they really made me believe that those were the CMAs, it was a good effort, and I will commend the show for making the most of having all these characters together and remembering who knew what secrets. I liked the seat filler gags – Juliette wasn’t important enough to merit one! To my surprise, Carrie Underwood was the least wooden guest presenter, and none of the singing performances stood out.
