I love catch-up facilities

I found myself in the weird position of checking I could find Dave on the EPG in the house the other day. (An explanation for people outside the UK, Dave is the name of a free-to-air TV channel that claims to be the home of witty banter, in an attempt to fight people like me’s long-established perception that it’s the place where ‘funny’ panel shows and Top Gear air on repeat.) It’s now the home of Parks and Recreation, which was on last night in the much more sensible 8 p.m. slot than BBC Four’s late-night one - seriously, I remember an interview where the cast were criticising it.
But although 8 o’clock on a Monday night is a good slot in theory, in practice, it was a relief I’d also checked that Dave has a catch-up facility online, because my life being what it is at the moment, there was no way I was going to be able to watch it live. So I’m probably going to sneak in a few more season 3 Leslie/Ben fics before I do – does that make me a bad fan? A selfish one. I want Dave to be glad they bought the rights, but I also want to read more fic before canon moves on.
(In other TV news, I plan to catch up eventuallyon Tuppence and Tommy’s adventures and Person of Interest, which is back this week. SHAW! BEAR! MACHINE! Strong likelihood of helicopters and defenestration!!!)
What I did do last night was catch up on Nashville
3.9 Two Sides to Every Story
I can’t even look up whether Winter Nash Fest is a real thing or just an useful contrivance for the show. But it it was mocking hipsters through it, maybe it was made up. And yet, those performances were in front of real crowds, but maybe they hijacked something else.
That line where Gunnar was praising Sadie was uncomfortable-making.
I was amused by how Deacon’s grumpiness about Zoey taking over his couch spread a little to Scarlett, but if she’s diversifying into management, Zoey slobbing in her depression would be annoying; Juliette’s face at the couplefest of the waiting room and misunderstanding of Avery’s side of the phone conversation; and Avery’s face at Zoe and Gunnar’s awkward at the band meeting.
I like ZAG’s voices together, but not the band name.
An episode of disguises, quickly removed – Emily realising Juliette’s plan for the day was to stalk Avery was priceless. It’s probably not THE most ridiculous, or illegal, thing Juliette has had her do.
This was quickly topped by JULIETTE IN DISGUISE IN A SCOOTER. I WAS CRYING WITH LAUGHTER. This may be the funniest thing ever on the show, probably funnier because it was in the middle of everyone’s angsty drama. (It also distract me from wondering whether Sadie’s character has a superpower of making men sound like awkward fanboys around her. I mean, I know these characters have the ‘Oh, X, I love your work’ conversations, sometimes delivered by non-actors all the time, but they were excruciating.)
I’d say ‘blame the hormones’ but...it was Juliette. Poor, put-upon Avery, what with her and his bandmates.
Ugh. They made Jeff Fordham appreciate Layla’s talent and apologise for not recognising it before. Why try to humanise him, show? He’s been one note too long. And it only got worse with the guitar playing.
Terry’s ‘Storm is Coming’ song was pretty good, partly because it was blusier than the normal music on this show. He then had a meltdown so he could carry out his allotted part in Scarlett’s plotline of returning to her music. Which we all saw coming.
Oh, Zoey. I do sympathise with her over Gunnar being an idiot, although until she bared all her despair to Scarlett, I did think she was being selfish. (Have they forgotten about Jeff Fordham trying to pick her up musically, though?)
Juliette did the right thing in advocating for Avery with Sadie. Yay! I was also touched that Avery showed some concern about Scarlett insisting she was going to perform. So, will the perfectly charming new line-up be called Scarlett and her Exes? Poor Zoey (and looking at the visual of blonde Scarlett in her near nighty dress, the image of the band as was was...more diverse, so Noah the manager’s enthusiasm seemed a bit like whitewashing. Was that a comment on country music’s whiteness, or just because of plot?) Of course, how long will it last? Oh, just the night – I hope Gunnar got the other two’s permission to speak for the band with the potential manager.
Jeff/Layla – blech. I know he was more human around her, but he’s still in charge of her label. If Harvard hasn’t rescinded the offer, maybe now would be the time? She may know what irony is, but her decision-making is still appalling.
Juliette/Avery fabulousness, with those oversized pics of Juliette in the background. Just good friends! Uh-huh.
I’ll break my omerta on ‘Ruke’. They’re DOOMED. Never mind all the other Deacon-shaped, life goal-shaped obstacles, he stole y’all from Tami Taylor. Dude. No.
