shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Nashville irresistible Juliette Barnes)

Nashville 3.15 That’s The Way Love Goes

The big thing this episode was Rayna’s Opry anniversary and settling down after the events of the last episode.

I was amused that Scarlett was SOOO engaged in the new band that she walked away from deciding its name so easily, although I’d rather watch her interact with Gunnar and Avery than all this class/location, is this a date or a consultation awkwardness with the hot doctor. Because we all know it’s not going anywhere much. I know they concentrated on how Scarlett’s need to vent ruined it as a date – she made such a fair point to Deacon about being forced to keep his secrets – but there are other issues, let alone Gunnar unresolvedness.

However, I was amused when, after the apology, she invited him to come watch her perform with her two ex-boyfriends and thus came up with the band’s name, as I thought she would, because Gunnar’s titles were terrible (you just knew that sleepless Avery said he’d leave it to him. Poor Juliette and Avery, because it’s unlikely they’ll get more sleep when the baby comes).

I liked the scene where Gunnar told Avery how much this opportunity meant to him, and Avery listened. Although Gunnar didn’t talk about how he threw away his first chance to perform. I really do love what this trio’s dynamic has become. And I did get that GUNNAR’S FACE moment I wanted as he clocked that the Hot Doctor was Scarlett’s date and tall enough for her to look up to him adorably and Hot Doctor had kissing rights. But remember how you went out with her best friend after shutting her out, Gunnar?

Although Maddie was going on and on about Rayna/Deacon (to the point of being irritating), I was more interested in watching Luke be set up as a shadow figure to Rayna the record label boss – I note his cordial relations with Bucky. But the episode was mainly about Luke as a father. Spending time just with Sage would be better fathering than taking him to the Opry. And he should have expected Deacon to be there. At least Luke called Sage on wanting to come to Nashville to gaze adoringly at the talented Maddie some more.

I called Will’s writing partner being gay. Equally predictable was Will being an idiot and being closed off. The revelation that he was kicked out from his home young explains a lot.

Jeff didn’t seem to be showing any signs of turning human as he prepped Layla for her meet with Bucky, which I wouldn’t have minded seeing, and tried to be sneaky about being her manager. I both enjoyed her yelling at him in their next scene for his Svengali tendencies and felt the ‘they’re going to kiss’ build up. But Bucky being reasonable about the single drop and Layla going out with new people and asserting herself with Jeff was better.

It was reasonable (even without the cancer secret) for Deacon to say he’d think about Rayna’s invitation. She did seem to be expecting him to be at her back and call at the last minute after asking him for time and space, which isn't fair. But Maddie was being so unreasonable that it made Rayna see his point. His performing with the girls was graceful and nice, and it feels bad to even think ‘nepotism’. The sisters sounded great, although I couldn’t make out what they were singing for most of the song.

I didn’t like the triple Xs song as much as I expected to. (Are these dates in Nashville? Won’t HAVING A BABY hamper Avery’s involvement in the fledgling band’s tour?)

So the best performance was from Rayna and Deacon, partly because they sang it so simply and movingly. I liked the way that Rayna was the most emotional for most of it, but that Deacon, with his darker knowledge, got the last word, as it were. His cabin is so lovely, I don’t know why he doesn’t spend more time there. Anyway, FINALLY, Rayna knows – and I like that Scarlett’s outpouring led to him telling her as well as the honesty demanded of him by singing together with Rayna.

Teddy not choosing to answer the phone while driving was a rare wise decision.

I’ve written before about how they’ve reached a point where Rayna’s support of Sadie works, and I liked that instead of being cowed by the news story, Sadie did the opposite – she must have agreed to the questions being asked about the lawsuits. Obviously Pete isn't a happy bunny.

Huh, apparently there was a lot that I liked about the ep.
