Well, who knows about the fic? I'm pressed for time now and canon is still changing, but I've surprised myself by how much I've written for this show over the years.
I think the length of time Thomas has been at Downton is a huge factor. He tried to get away during wartime, and failed, but that's almost five years ago now (if I've got my calculations right). He's seen terrible options out there for him in service and he doesn't seem able to adapt.
I'll need to think more about the suicide spec. I don't recall them going there before. The only obstacle to doing it, and I think it's a big one, although I'm expecting at least one tragedy before the end, is that it would make the Crawleys look like negligent employers, especially Robert, and break the kids' hearts, plus it would make Carson and, to varying degrees, the rest of the staff look bad, because they'd contributed to it. I doubt the show would go there.
