[personal profile] shallowness
Was forced to catch up on this (due to acquisition of a social life).

'Twas Week Before Blackpool

Between Tess and Claudia and Darcy, there was a lot of blue. The dancers’ frocks all looked pretty good apart from the ones that were clearly committing to a theme.

Anita’s quickstep was quite spiffy. I have no idea why Gleb had to put in a drag through the legs in a quickstep other than he’s Gleb.

I was a little surprised that Jay was put on second. I was even more surprised that the VT didn’t involve an acting coach. Anyway, I loooved the design and camera choice that made the studio seem enormous. Did the new singer sing ‘breached’ instead of ‘reached’? So, there was this gorgeous quality to Jay’s dance, even if he wasn’t quite performing it in his face, still, and then there was the bit where it went wrong (but at least it happened late and didn’t wreck much of the dance). Six was really harsh.

For Jamelia’s VT, it had clearly been decided that they hadn’t had a Taking Tristan to Work Day, so they’d better stuff that in in case they’ll have no more opportunities. The routine was quite fun – I noticed a few too many pauses, but not so much what the judges were picking up on. Craig had marked himself into giving her a five.

Again, they made the studio look big for Helen’s tango – and we the drapes from Caroline’s Epic Showdance last year were back. It was all pretty good; I thought there were a few moments where she looked a bit limp, but those may have been the balance issues that the judges were talking about, and it probably wasn’t as great as I’d thought it would be.

So for Katie’s rumba, there were moves that made me think ‘ooh, we haven’t seen that this series’ in a series where the rumbas have been light on content, apparently – I thought there were one or two sticky bits and didn’t love it quite as much as the judges did. But it appeared to have been a masterclass of sucking up to Len from Anton. And grumpy Craig decided to aim another jab in Jay’s direction, which !?!?

The hip hop samba was more of a hit than a miss, although I did see how the two styles were battling each other. Kellie went for it, well, Keving had gone for it with the concept/choreography, even if the first wasn’t his idea, and even as I thought ‘Len’s going to hate this’ - it was an acquired taste for the others - I admit they needed to go big after being in the dance off after the middles. It was the most entertaining dance of the show so far.

Craig summed up my feelings about Peter’s Viennese Waltz, so maybe the critique should be addressed at Janette. My word would have been ‘overwrought’ rather than ‘frenetic’ and I know that was a little led by the music. But he danced it well. I liked, again, the shot that made the room huge and the strings of lights – less so the smoke and the designs on the floor.

I started thinking, cynically, ‘Well, here’s Georgia’s audition for the West End. Can she sing? Not that that seems to have stopped Tom Chambers’ (I heard him on the radio that very afternoon). But the sheer verve and brio, not to mention pizzazz of the way she danced the routine, was irresistible. She has grabbed on her successes of the past few weeks, made a platform of them and is turning out to be a bit of a star turn, because it was impossible not to watch her. Deservedly the best score of the series so far. Scoringwise, of course Darcy mentioned something that wasn’t just so and gave her a 10 anyway, while Craig was succinctly positive, and gave her a 9.

Given that they’d got the last slot, I was expecting a bigger finish from Jeremy and Karen’s routine than jumping back in the cart and picking up a big fake diamond, frankly. As it was, I thought his footwork was okay for the first half, but then when he had to lift his leg it got a little wrong.

Can’t see Jay in the bottom two as he was being Banquo’s ghost in the Clauditorium, doing an I’ve Let The World Down Face – PUPPY! - but if it’s not Katie or Jeremy joining Jamelia (because she feels like an inevitability), I don’t know who is going to be unmemorable enough to get there. Will this test Anita and Gleb’s popularity?

Wow, storytelling from the pros’ number! It started off as per usual, with nice dancing off the benches – and those anonymous boys singing the song must have been relieved not to have to perform much. But the second Brendan danced in, looking sharp in a suit (also Joanne Clifton can work glasses) and bringing in unrequited feels and purposeful choreography – I loved the drama that played out. More numbers that, please.

Thanks for showing us Jay’s stumble, recap. Georgia was clearly even more excited this week than even two weeks ago.

Oti and Aljiaz were more entertaining than Brandon Flowers’ hair.

The producers decided to torture Kellie and Jay, but this was the only dance-off Jamelia had a hope of winning, and Jeremy knew it, so there was no point trying to bribe anyone with the paso that could have been – Blackpool came a week too late for him. I thought Jamelia performed better the second time around, while Jeremy was worse. Probably being in the dance-off so often helped.
