Top six films of 2015

Birdman – riveting, unexpected and bravura, rather than precious, although you’d think it would be, seeing as it contains an actor in his late middle age having a meltdown and its subtitle is ‘or the unexpected virtue of ignorance’
A Most Violent Year – another film for grown-ups about choices, morality and, er, violence. If you want to see Chastain’s take on Lady Macbeth without actually performing the Scottish play, watch this. Also, I saw Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina straight after this, man’s got range.
Selma – an intelligent and gripping look at one of Dr Martin Luther King’s campaigns for racial equality from a black perspective. Depressingly relevant despite being a historical drama. (Oyewelo deserved way more award recognition.)
Inside Out – brilliant film about a girl’s interior landscape. Or Pixar gets it right, so we’re talking wit, intelligence, heart and a great story. Also, it was great to see an original female-driven story being one of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Suffragette – Everyone who is old enough to vote or nearly old enough to vote should go see this film. I was so impressed by how it balanced the personal drama, laying out the politics and bringing a piece of history that’s not well enough known to life.
Bridge of Spies – Spielberg makes it seem so easy to make a thoroughly intelligent and entertaining film. It obviously isn’t, because so many people fail at it. Best spy movie of the year.
Listed in the order I saw them, not preference.
Huh, four of those were historial dramas.
Almost making the list were: The Falling; Avengers-Age of Ultron; The Man from UNCLE; The Martian; Brooklyn; The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. I just had more quibbles with all of those.
Another rec, this time for a film that came out in the UK this year that I couldn’t see in cinemas, but did get to see on DVD: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Midnight. Deep breath. it’s a black and white vampire movie in Farsi, which references Westerns, has a feminist sensibility and is defiantly, wonderfully its own thing.
Due to circumstances, I went to see fewer films than usual this year.
