Agents of SHIELD 3.2
Oh phew, May’s back on screen. Sadly, so was Ward, being a bit smug and irritating and EVIL, although I didn’t think Hunter had a chance until the reveal that he knew he needed May’s help (and she and Skye/Daisy have better dibs on Ward). I loved watching May with her father – clearly we need more of May and her parents on this show. Obviously, if she was playing golf (GOLF!) things were not right. So things didn’t work out with Andrew (because...Coulson, I like to think, even if the show may or may not admit it) and the team, especially desperate-for-a-win Coulson need her. But I’ll take her splintering off with Hunter to chase down Ward.
Because, seriously, rebuilding HYDRA...snooze. Bringing back Baron Von Underused’s son? Snooze. Of all the links with the movies, too...I’d rather we had Peter McNiccols’s character meet other Asgardians (Sif, especially) because of the history, and the moment they talked science gobbledygook, I wanted Jane.
Also, as the previously showed, the show really likes men with dark stubble/beards.
Meanwhile I could live with more Bobbi-Fitz hanging out, because her sympathy towards him was a nice new side to see.
Mack and Daisy seem to have defaulted into being partners in arms.
Coulson could afford to lose Daisy less than Simmons, pretty much. (I switched from Skye to Daisy midway through the episode, apparently.)
I thought the grand sweep of Fitz rescuing Simmons was a bit much, and, in a way, happened too quickly. I’d have liked to see more of her on the planet – I thought she might team up with the sword-fighting lord. Hopefully, there’ll be flashbacks.
The opening flashback (apart from the old guy’s feeble English accent) was vaguely interesting – I half-expected Reed Diamond’s baddie to turn up. McNiccol’s snarky take on centuries on earth and the team was amiable enough and I hope his reaction to the Daisy = an Inhuman leads somewhere.
Daisy’s speech about wanting other Inhumans to be able to work with SHIELD (the people like her being brought into her family of choice is all about her need to belong and to be validated) was promising. She so doesn’t want to be a monster, even as her alieness was so very evident.
So, not great, and I’m not convinced that all the things they’re setting up are going to be that great either (Ward could be going after Andrew for a few reasons, but if he is going after May’s people...he seems a bit inefficient at it), but entertaining enough, with a few rather nice emotional bits. But the ones I probably appreciated the most weren’t the ones the show was pressing the most...
