shallowness: Sky High's Warren Peace smiling (Warren Peace smiles!)
[personal profile] shallowness
Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The one where we meet Boyle’s ex-wife, who is quite a woman. I was amused, but also borderline squicked by the plotline and how Boyle over-shared. It’s always been true, but it was really striking how much Peralta commentates on his own life in this episode.

I can’t get the idea out of my head that the show is also lampshading Melissa Fumero’s pregnancy (or the writers thinking about how they’d handle it is colouring what they’re coming up with).

Anyway, I was chuckling, even at Santiago causing Terry a world of pain
(but not so much the 'SAM' 'SAM' thing) and especially at Holt’s cri de coeur about the horrors of bad bureaucracy. And stellar reaction shots from Stephanie Beatriz, as ever.

And I just caught up on Agents of SHIELD - Many Heads, One Tale

A reminder that Ward is evil and ambitious with it. Also he likes to talk a lot and is after some HYDRA vault I don't remember being mentioned before.

More interesting were the tensions at SHIELD, Mac found something new to worry about in Coulson's feelings for Rosalind (I agreed with him on that), May hate!staring at Linc who'd moved in, but is taking it casual with Skye-sorry-Daisy. Um, okay. Let's see if that survives being close to Skye's hacker awesome.

Coulson wasn't an idiot about Rosalind and ACTU, thank goodness - given that we've had quite a few characters not being who they seemed by now. Shipperwise, I liked the referencing of how well he knows May, in as much as you can parse how someone will handle finding out such a thing about their ex for whom they still have feelings.

I shared the team's enjoyment of the nice little trap they'd set up, using Hunter as the obnoxious hacker (I really could stand to read meta about this show's Anglophilia). Bobbi got her chance to shine, first making even striding purposefully down corridors seem cool (and I liked the running gag about Daisy controlling the doors) and then another upgrade for her batons.

Meanwhile, the ram symbol being the symbol of choice for a centuries-old death cult? When will we be seeing the wolf and the hart? To be honest, despite the actors' best efforts, I was still joking about wolves and harts (and octopuss) while Fitzsimmons were getting the big kiss. Poor Fitz, run away from being in a love triangle, especially if Simmons breaks off the second, more tended kiss to notice a plot point.

We got a name for Powers Boothe's character (ha, like that will stick) and some possibly mendacious backstory for how Phil Coulson got recruited into SHIELD.

I admit that was a nice little pay-off for the question of trust between Coulson and Rosalind, and a nice little vulnerability in the actress's rasp as she realised Powers Boothe was a baddie and she'd been played.

Also MAY apologising to Linc! If things hadn't been so dire, I'd have bemoaned the lack of hazing, but this was apt and showed how great she is. Although what he did is on Andrew.

I also liked the repeat of two voices telling the same thing, as we realised Hydra is older than it seemed (okay, fine, that does justify it surviving Captain America 2's take-down. All this raises a shedload of questions about the timeline for when the Asgardians etc were here, though) and the cult sacrificing people to Death on that other planet that is now building an army of some Inhumans. (But where do the Cree fit into all that?)

Ha, I can't see Ward putting up with ruling alongside Powers Boothe or some alien.

The episode ended with Ward being very, very evil and their finding a way to continue to make Andrew a conflicted figure, instead of the danger of the show brushing away the fact that he just went and killed people. That also confirms that Ward is May's not Skye's to execute then. (Hopefully when he's speechifying.)
