Scorpion – Adaptation 2.17
Such an entertaining episode! The continuity announcer fortunately said nothing about changing episodes, but called Scorpion a military drama. Which I would not say is that accurate a description.
Anyway, I was amused by that before the episode started with a plot-related drone (military! Well, not really) carrying plot-related drugs, which morphed into sock puppets, because Toby and Walter were still ‘working through their issues’ at therapy (drama?). There was also punning on feelings/felt. Toby got to point out how annoying Walter’s superiority complex is and Walter mocked the hat. The therapist was acute enough to find out that Toby and Happy are together despite the no fraternisation rule.
Cue steam coming out of Walter’s orifices. Well, it would have if this were a cartoon.
So the plot had something to do with very bad drug runners (the show’s take on the War on Drugs is that it killed an eight year old Mexican girl doing maths homework. OH, SCORPION) using drones to bring heroin into the States. Walter designed a ray gun (more or less) to bring them down in the middle of nowhere in Arizona, but obviously it wasn’t as simple as that, because the drug runners were ADAPTING.
In the background of the mission, Walter had given Toby and Happy an ultimatum, because ‘fraternisation got in the way of the team working efficiently’, either they broke up or one of them went. Everyone else thought this was way unreasonable (no-one used Walter changing his plans to help Cabe as an example of how their relationships aren’t solely professional as a team, because it wasn’t a fraught enough issue). Toby being Toby said that this stance was a fig-leaf obstacle for Walter/Paige happening. He said that in the worst way at the worst time, of course.
Then the fact that Walter had grounded Toby meant that they didn’t have a doctor in the field when – INEVITABLY – the bad guys shot the Mexican detective helping team Scorpion. So Toby had to talk Sly (ha) and Happy (turns out she’s not a fan of blood) through field surgery, blaming Walter all the while.
This episode featured Sly’s great love for his own drone, Robert Patrick looking cool when shooting stuff and Paige wearing what looked like a nice red blouse until it turned out to have silly sleeves.
On the shippy front, Toby wasn’t just pushing it with Walter all episode. I thought he was on dangerous ground by unilaterally deciding to announce to the rest of the team that he and Happy were a couple. Obviously, it needed to be said as Walter knew, but Happy needed to agree to it. (SIDEBAR: while she might not have got the combo immediately, Paige would so know what a portmanteau name for a couple is.) Toby then proceeded to describe their relationship and sexual relations in some pretty irritating ways. I thought Happy restrained herself admirably.
But the kicker, and what Happy got rightly most irked about, was that he put a tracker on her phone. !!! Even though great play was made of that time she nearly died in Antarctica and how Toby’s concern then could have jeopardised the mission, that’s way inappropriate. He got away with it by admitting he was scared and that he’d been in love with her for a while – while he can talk himself into trouble, he can talk himself out – but I was a little surprised Happy accepted that and went in for the hug.
If it was a choice between Happy and Toby on the team, I would have picked Happy, who, apart from the baulking at doing surgery, which is totally understandable, was calm and competent (unlike Walter and Toby). They could get another doctor!
It’s a moot point, because she told Walter to stuff his ultimatum, they weren’t breaking up and he could keep them both or fire them both. (SOLIDARITY!) Toby said that was emasculating, but he got off lightly.
I like ‘Quintis’ well enough (and I imagine several kittens were had that the writers acknowledged the name), but I think I’m more invested in Paige/Walter because of where things were at when I started watching the show. I liked that Miss Human Feelings tried to argue to Mr Robot that the team could adapt in a way he could understand. He grumpily accepted, but it was the moment that she looked disappointed at his grumpiness and he yielded because he doesn’t want Paige to have a sad face that showed he’s a goner.
I’ve forgotten all the other little fun bits like how Walter was always going after the drone at risk to life and limb - I have a strange sense of humour. Apparently I don’t want Sly to get hurt, like, AT ALL. And I am starting to feel that I would like to watch all the episodes I’ve missed in their entirety, not just clips, because I get a kick out of them making like the A-team and thinking on their feet amidst all the ridiculousness.
I checked and a third season is coming.
