shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (Kensi and Deeks partners NCIS LA)
[personal profile] shallowness
NCIS: LA 4.20 Purity

Nice to spend time solely with our team, and I enjoyed Callen being the aggro protestor for entrapment purposes. I then rolled my eyes at him being all macho and wanting to complete the mission with the noisy guns and the trembling hands.

Kensi and Deeks were amusingly bad at filling out their tax forms in different ways, but we got a hug, Hetty giving Deeks quite the lesson and a beautiful callback to the mysterious Morgan.

I was a little dismayed that we started off with exotic dancers (and when it turned out the main victim was celibate, his ‘bros’ ignoring of his discomfort made me scowl). Fortunately, they swerved away from where I thought they were going i.e. I didn’t want Kensi going undercover as a dancer, and I wish they hadn’t backed Deeks up for insisting on watching the videos.

The plot didn’t stand up to much scrutiny. The fact that the big bad did know the men who were poisoned – wasn’t that a humongous coincidence? It seemed like they just used the club as a test site because it was a club. Their link with the janitor (them using his ID to cover their tracks) made more sense.

I mean, also, their motivational pile up made no sense. And then they made great use of the phrase ‘make America great again’, which has acquired, er, a certain resonance since the show first aired…

Anyway, the point about the baddies being bad was most exquisitely made by the ring leader, who wanted to protect American children, using his own son to be the one to set off the poison that would kill a kajillion people. Subtle, that. Callen being there for the kid later was plain nice (so although I was eye-rolling at Callen having to be there for the bust, the emotional pay-off almost made up for it).

Nell’s pony tail is getting on, Nell wore a very nice dress and pulled out at least one moment of nonchalant brilliance that the team took for granted. I wish they’d show more of her friendship with Kensi onscreen.

It was fun, daft, not brilliant, but closer to the show I want to watch. And all the talk of cyanide (they even had a very nice visually scientific test) made me have Agatha Christie associations that probably kindly disposed me towards it all.
