Timeless 2.2 The Darlington 500
I felt that this episode was setting up the likely general pattern for season 2 episodes, with Team Lifeboat finding the sleeper Rittenhose agents by following the mothership. Lucy was quite tough with Flynn, and the team’s handler was tough with Connor. Her condition was tough on Djhia and maybe she should spill about that as well as Lucy’s insomnia.
There was more focus on Wyatt, with us and the other two learning about his abusive father, his stint as a ‘bootlegger’ (sounds better than drugs mule) and fanboyness over race cars, which the others rightly teased him about. Racism in the 1950s was given a bit of an airing, and inevitably we got to see Wyatt’s driving skillz (after he killed two people with little fuss. Granted, they were going to kill a lot more people and it was in a fight, but it was over very quickly given all the discussion of killing and the stopping thereof.). Lucy was about as high as he was after that display, following the very nicely shot mega close-ups of them in the boot. I’d forgotten about Lucy’s claustrophobia.
I do not think the show can maintain Wyatt and Lucy nearly kissing and being continually interrupted for long, though.
Ordeal By Innocence 2/3
Phillip spoiled everyone’s breakfast, but eventually he thought through the fact that that meant the killer was one of them. Might even be his put-upon wife. Not sure about Mary finding her spine when for the rest of the night she was being wound up towards a nervous breakdown.
They all did, really. Hester did indeed seem to feel the need to suck up to all the men – my current working theory is that the blood on her nighty on The Night was from a miscarriage/abortion. Tina decided to let Everyday Racism have it, given that the new evidence meant questions were being asked about her unsisterly relationship with Mickey as part of the questions about where she was at the time of the death (GWENDA.)
And Calgary would not stay away. If anything, I feel that the influence of the nuclear threat – Rachel built a bunker that the maid uses for primal screaming – was overdone. Also the sequence with the clock and the blood.
We found out that Chief Constable Perv’s wife had a thing with Jack – yet another happy marriage! And so the chief constable had cause to fake the evidence against Jack, and Mr Argyll knew it.
Well, if you’re going to run someone down deliberately, do buckle up (did they have seatbelts in the 50s?)! Couldn’t happen to a nicer sexual harasser who falsified evidence.
The first dead body of the episode was followed by a second, with drunk Phillip seeming rather unlikely to have killed himself in that manner.
Glenda is going to be most put out about the inevitable effect on the wedding.
All the characters continue to be disturbed and/or nasty. It was a little less frantic, but some of the flashbacks were shoehorned in.
In the picture for the episode on iPlayer, Eleanor Tomilinson looks a lot like Keeley Hawes. Someone should cast them as relatives.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine 5.8 Return to Skyfire
Back to the world of fantasy novels and fantasy fandom, and I thought Terry Crews was ON IT in this episode. Jake’s Legolas-esque costume was amusing, although it was inevitable he’d be confused for the other guy.
The B-plot was maybe stronger overall, although it featured no daft song. Enthusiastic, but maddening Boyle would be enough to make Holt and Santiago not read all the instructions.
