shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
[personal profile] shallowness
I blame forced restarts for Windows updates for not being able to post until now.

Over the weekend, I saw ‘There’s Nothing Like a Dame’ – I hadn’t bothered going to see it in the cinema, because I knew it was coming to TV. It basically collects together four dames: Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins and Joan Plowright, who all know each other from way back and prompts them to talk. I laughed, especially at Maggie Smith’s admission that she hasn’t watched Downton Abbey. There were clips and photos of their body of work – young Eileen Atkins reminded me of Andrea Riseborough. I think it might have been a better documentary if it had been filmed over a longer period of time, but in shorter blocks – it was all filmed in one day, and you could tell that they were getting tired and irritable towards the end.

Ho-hum. I really liked the actress they got to play young Hale. I’d be more interested in her adventures than the adult Hale and Ruby. The sexism of ‘and your prize for being so good is…artificial insemination, so you can be the mother of our leader, not our leader! Yay!’ made me go ouch, of course. But it also has to be said that it’s all very well the show jumping on this particular bandwagon (and making it a character point for how Hale reacts later), but I remember last season’s ogling. In fairness, there has been no ogling this season, but that’s a low bar.

The idea of going back in time was all very well, but I’m not convinced that it works, given that Fitz was incarcerated by Hale for six months and that if you assume that the difference in the passage of time in the present continued when he was in the future…It’s the sort of thing you’d assume they’d have worked out on a whiteboard in the writers’ room and would continually refer to, but I’m not convinced they did.

Also, I had got tired of the breakfast routine long before Coulson punctured it. It didn’t help that I’m So Tired of HYDRA by what we saw. Okay, young Sitwell was well-cast and young Von Struycker and Hale’s rivalry will play out nicely with their kids, but I mostly didn’t care. Pasdar tried to make Talbot entertaining. I was with Coulson up to a point, grateful he expressed what we were all thinking about the Confederacy, but we spent a lot of time with characters I don’t care about! Boo hoo, poor Ruby, learning she is not the no. 1 daughter figure on this show.

Oh, Hale. If you just took someone into outer space via an alien device, you need to take them seriously when they tell you they’ve travelled in time, regardless of gender. The twist of her wanting to work with Coulson was good, but if she thinks Earth is a galactic superpower, she’s off on one (clearly she hasn’t seen the movies or come across Asgardians). And what aliens do the Confederacy represent and who owns the battleship?

As for the rest of them on the Lighthouse, May is the last sane one standing. I got Daisy’s emotional reaction. No, Fitz, she isn’t going to trust you. But then turning to tap Robin? This is the woman they’re going to try to make Captain America 2? Stop being quite so hearts eyes about her, Coulson and Show. I wasn’t sure which boyfriend she was meant to have sacrificed for the greater good, BTW.

Given the stuff about HYDRA’s sexism, I wonder if Mack has asked Fitz if he wants Simmons to check his work recently. I know you could character and situation-specific excuses, but still.

Regardless of the fact that they’re actively trying to break the timeloop, and Deke’s existence and two copies of Fitz’s tools give me hope that they will break it, Jemma too started believing ‘we are invincible’ and told Fitz that they’d be all right because SURPRISE! Deke’s their grandson. Fitz’s response to that news was all that I could have hoped. No, he’s not the worst, but yes, your daughter’s taste in men can be questioned.

All told, probably not an episode that should have had a character grading stuff.
