shallowness: Margaret Hale of North and South adaptation sitting at desk writing (Margaret North and South writing)
[personal profile] shallowness
If you've been reading recent posts, it may not surprise you that I brought a presentational set of Jane Austen-themed stamps yesterday. The Mansfield Park one is a little wonky. Of course it is.

I also went and bought the Dancing in the Edge soundtrack at HMV. (Product Placement on the Beeb shocker!) I've been meaning to discuss HMV since the news it went into recievership - news that wasn't a surprise to me, any way. I'd stopped going there for a long time due to rubbish service. It would help with the selling of items if customers felt that the staff wanted to sell them stuff. As others have said, the stock has not always been brilliant if you don't want the best sellers and the pricing generally came across as being too dear. Over the years, it's been a random mess.

However, at just about the time that it was becoming inescapable that Amazon and others were so cheap because of their interesting tax arrangements, all HMV's problems came to a head. It suddenly became obvious that the last chain standing for your CD and DVD needs (I'm one of the Luddites without MP3 or Blu-Ray players or whatever's replaced them yet) on the high street was about to go. So, in I dashed for the sales and found nothing to my taste, there was the gift voucher debacle etc and everyone rolled their eyes and went 'and that's why you're in trouble'. It seems as if 'the industry' will support the rescue of some form of HMV because of that fact, and if a shinier and improved version could rise from the ashes, I would support that.

As I'm no longer comfortable using Amazon (the consensus seems to be that the Marketplace section is fine), I am in a bind. For music, there is an independent retailer near me, except I find it intimidating. My music taste is so eclectic. I'm certainly never going to buy Kelly Clarkson CDs there, am I? So there are the supermarkets, also selling DVDs, but I don't feel all that comfortable buying DVDs there either. Plus they're only going to sell the big blockbusters, not the other weird little movies I loved on the big screen or the randomer TV shows. I can see myself caving and going to Amazon until/unless what's left of HMV is put on a stronger footing so I can use it to order stuff.

Any other people in the UK in a similar bing?

Finally, I had an inspiration for what would be the best ever ever episode of Revenge. So, the British media has been full of Daniel Day-Lewis and his likely win of an Oscar for Lincoln, reminding me that he was in Last of the Mohicans with...Madeline Stowe. YEAH. I know it's unlikely, we've also been reminded that he's very picky about his projects, but I've been chortling to myself thinking about DD-L cast as an investor or someone higher up in the Initiative or whatever, wandering about the Hamptons, possibly being genial but lethal underneath and interacting with various characters and how their pouting would stack up. Please get on that, Revenge, it'd be so entertaining.
