[personal profile] shallowness
I had a Nashville double bill on Sunday night, and it made me more sympathetic of some characters, feeling I had a better understanding of where most of them were coming from and that at least the show wasn’t too one-note about them either (sorry). Will I be in it for the long haul? Still don't know.

Ep 2 I can’t help it (if I’m still in love with you)

I was self-righteously horrified that Juliette’s manager et al were marketing her writhing around like that in those shorts for teenage and tweenage girls.

(I’m calling dibs on Rayna’s sister at least having feelings for Teddy).

At least I saw sizzle between Rayna and Deacon, and the backstory was nicely filled out. I...could see how being in love with someone who was an addict would turn sour. Also, I am presuming she was pregnant and didn’t know who the daddy was when she rushed into marriage with Teddy (who on some level let her down by not being the reliable man she thought she was getting.) While I’m uncomplicatedly rooting for Scarlett/Gunnar, even if it’s unfinished business, I don’t want to ship an adulterous pairing (or another one, given Alicia/Will). I enjoyed ALL the Scarlett/Gunnar and Rayna/Deacon parallels.

I see a pattern of saving the best song till the last in the episode emerging.

Ep 3 Someday You’ll Call My Name Of course Rayna’s girls could sing. Nice to hear them doing a better job of Juliette’s song, although it was disconcerting to hear them sing those lyrics. I really like how we’re getting to see writing > demo > recording as well as ‘live’ performances of songs. It proves how doing so can be used to highlight a dramatic point, even if they don’t sound as drastically different as that cover. It always infuriated me that Glee never did enough of that.

Rayna and Teddy share a way of ducking out of something they don’t want to carry on doing very politely, don’t they?

And the show, again, choose to mix things up with when and how they have Avery be a jerk. I am sure he and Gunnar will have a brawl at some point.

There was a lot of buffering with this episode; it only bothered me with the last song.

Of course, I still have a tendency to think 'cut your losses', but then there wouldn't be a show/song material if they did that, now would there?

The Good Wife 4.04 Waiting for the Knock I love that Cary only got involved when Kalinda started pushing Nick around.

But yeah, his antennae were twitching at Nick and Kalinda’s interaction at the meet, anyway, and then he saw the violence. And Cary’s being smart – I loved him bringing the trustee into looking through the accounts, which Diane and Will couldn't see their way to doing, and how well it paid off. Although he was the one who was sacrificed for a gambit he’d come up with. Oops? But he had smarts enough and maybe empathy to see that The Trustee had enjoyed being useful and a part of things, and smarts and charm enough to suggest how he could continue to do so. Good Cary episode is what I’m saying.

Loved the start of the ep and how it backtracked to the previous one – linking to Jackie’s woodlice hallucinations (yuck!) and Mattie, and, of course, Eli’s imminent crisis. Which clashed with Bishop’s. WILL, BEING ALL PROFESSIONAL! Does Peter actually know that Alicia did hook up with Will? He’d smelled it coming, of course.

And there were all the moral complexities of dealing with Bishop, and Alicia seems to be the only one with an issue with the firm taking his cash for the illegitimate businesses, although this ep put pay to the fiction of a distinction between them. But Kalinda was the only on to understand where Alicia might be coming from. And then there was Alicia’s understanding of Bishop the father and sympathy for his don. (Family first being emphasised just as Peter may have rocked things just as they were knitting back together for them?? Also, I feel cheated of the kids' reaction to the news story breaking.)

I am disappointed that FBI lady (aka Lana) seemed to be the only FBI lady on her team. I hate it when shows do that. Yes, there’s this named character, maybe the team leader and she’s a lady, usually tiny with her hair loose, because this is TV, but she’s surrounded by big strong FBI gentlemen.

Oh, shut up Nick. Was Panjabi letting her accent slip deliberately in their bedroom encounter? And the question of why Lana is sniffing around Kalinda’s interactions with Eli is interesting. I don’t recall them doing something extra shady. By Eli Gold standards. But I don’t think it would be personal, unless if Lana was convinced he was the guy, but she seems too savvy for that. Hmm. Anyway, Kalinda was clinical.

I liked that Eli and Peter etc were kept in the straw poll while the story broke until Mattie brought Indira there – surely she’d have met her somewhere else. Obviously Mattie now believes Indira wasn’t lying – maybe mistaken on the details? – which makes me wonder how she could still float a friendship with Alicia on the terms that she has.

Excellent intertwining of everything, though.
