[personal profile] shallowness
The Bletchley Circle 2.3

I don’t know if this was actually better or if I was blinded by espionage. But more of my enjoyment came with going along with it than carping.

As a musician, I thought Iris ought to have stayed and listened to the cello being performed – although watching Hayley melt was fun – how out of control did she think her son was? Anyway, Iris got into the trouble of watching a man die of poisoning, being questioned by the FBI who wanted to ‘contain’ the situation instead of finding out the truth of it, and threatening her family. And the frustration of it, her husband still serving their country like she’d done, and having to tiptoe around these white men who weren’t doing the right thing.

The stakes were so much higher once Jean was taken. This after we were introduced to an actual Englishman playing an Englishman(TWO new cryptographers in this episode, what is it about San Fransisco?) I enjoyed the eye-candy and the subversion of him being an idiot Jean had propped up/used, while she had to grin and bear the fact that he was in her dream job.

Sidenote, at least Jean and Millie ve got jobs. Millie’s brusque waitressing was a delight, I bet she got away with it because the customers liked the accent, and bless Archie for turning up – he’s smitten, but it’s not him she’s kissing passionately. Bill Bryce has definitely got onto the pitch.

As soon as she’d realised her best friend (Susan, you’ve been relegated, darling) was gone, Millie blazed up and was magnificent. I loved her rage when facing the FBI, even if it was partly upper class privilege that Iris could never tap into. (Well interrupted, Olivia.) I loved her sweeping into the jazz club, dressed in red and accosting the former ambassador and getting somewhere informationwise.

Meanwhile Jean was also awesome (that was terrible tying up skills from the Russian thugs, though), being presciently paranoid, resisting torture, trying to escape, playing her captors. <3 Jean.

I was a bit more dubious about Hailey’s naivete. Yes, it sucks that the military wouldn’t let them earn money off their invention, but I couldn’t get all BOO! THE PATRIARCHY!! on them, because um, it’s the military. The ladies signed the papers. They’d probably do this even if Iris and Hailey weren’t women. Instead of trying to sell the machine again after the Prokoviev speech, Hailey should invent something else. And not grumble quite so openly to Russians, perhaps.

The guard’s warning, the whole ‘Josephine’ thing before he was shot, and whether Hailey was right to be so friendly with the cellist, let alone the question of who’d killed Arlov was all up in the air.

I would like to point out that everyone went to knowing ‘Vlad’ was ‘Vladmir Nikoleyev’ by magic.

Anyway, the final sequence, like all of it, looked gorgeous, but was elevated by Mr Rachael Stirling turning up to sing ‘I Only Have Eyes for You’ (which is such a gorgeous, atmospheric song). I loved how that was incorporated into the main drama – the note-of-dread transition from the previous scene, for one thing.

I got a DVD of Giles-centric Buffy the Vampire Slayer episodes very cheaply on sale, and have just started watching it. The first episode on it is ‘The Dark Age’ (the script, swoon…) and it left me craving Xander/Cordelia fic and Jenny/Giles, or ideally, an epic Jenny backstory fic, should anyone have any recs.
