The Capture ep 5
Time for the rug to be pulled from under us and Shaun. So, the reason Team Correction’s behaviour didn’t make sense was because it wasn’t them, mostly, and the anti-Correction lot became the conspirators. As it all unfolded in epic flashbacks, for Shaun and Rachel, I had to go ‘but the ends don’t justify the means’ for Hannah and co, just as much as it didn’t for the anti-terrorist cops and spooks.
As we learned Hannah had been in on it, and was later the only one to show Shaun any compunction, the question of what had happened to her arose. Eli (played by an actor who looked like a cross between Alan Tudyk and James Norton now that I got a good look at him) was a prima donna whistleblower who didn’t make plans to get out.
You possibly needed a firmer grasp of the chronology of events than I have to follow/precede developments, although I was okay. Callum Turner produced some very good moments of depths within depths, as Shaun was trapped by his ‘helpers’ (yeah, right, saw the stunt actor’s fall coming). I was definitely left with the impression that Callum, reassured that he didn’t kill Hannah, has doubts about what he did in Helmand
Will they have time to get their gear out of the club before Nadiya and the other cops investigate it?
As for Alma’s imprisoned brother, we’re not invested in him. It was suggested (by Frank) but not refuted by Hannah that he was guilty, although he didn’t look like an Islamist terrorist to me. But for all that Hannah claimed she was standing up for the principle of law, her means were the means she was railing against…
Rachel too learned that she had been a patsy, that she had been the one to bring ‘the stunt’ to the attention of the wrong people. Her reaction was laudable, not least because she has Patrick on side. Their attitude towards a now beyond desperate Shaun worked, and she took him home (although I would welcome a refresh: that’s her father’s house, and that was her formerly secret half-sister she was talkin to, right?)
Meanwhile we learned the true links between Frank, the nemesis lady and the cheating guv. And where the decision to kill the pesky British citizen on British soil (and torture the American employer, and attack the British video expert…) came from. But hey, it started whe they killed dogs. And is now going on to threatening kids.
I have to admit, I watched this with a lot of admiration for the rug-pull and misdirection, but possibly some of the flashbacking lagged. I was bugged by them having audio for the real Shaun-Hannah CCTV footage. HOW? I’m sure there was something else like that that wasn’t explained to my satisfaction, but I forget what it was.
The SNL sketch of Downton Abbey (the movie) is spot on (apart from the accents, for future references to all performers).
