The Capture finale

Did it stick the landing? Did it need to? It left me with a sense of dread at the hi-tech dystopia with technology only a step ahead of where we are where the ends justify the means, and Frank was only checked to appease someone more powerful, not because of his abuse of power. The stuff with Shaun worked, and Rachel was still active, while it was hard to feel very sorry for Charlie.

We had actual Famke Janssen turning up - I was thinking the actress looked a lot like her (or her CGId into Dark Pheonix if anyone cares to remember X3) but it was actually her, and for a brief while, all hope was pinned on Rachel and Shaun and Patrick causing enough stink that she’d decide to cut Correction. But as Detective Super Security Services said, if this had started in Russia and China, and was so useful, the West wasn’t going to let it go, and indeed we saw from Frank that they were intent on improving it.

The fake footage of Shaun taking Jaycee was very effective. And then the room, where what looked like kindness/mollifying Shaun before he went back behind bars turned out to be filming him to triple-lock the threat. Add to the threat to Jaycee and his reputation, we had Shaun thinking it was justice for what he’d actually done in Helmand which he was now facing up to. I thought that worked dramatically, and they’d seeded it well.

I liked Nadiya knowing she’d been bought to do her job, not justice. I was glad Rachel had told Shaun’s babymother and grandfather the truth about Hannah, Jaycee and Correction. I took her hiding the footage at the family home and not talking to her half-sister as the case not being over for her. Although I’m sure she was also happy to avoid dealing with her complicated feelings about her family (because there totally were daddy issues going on with Danny the boss.) Don’t know if her belief she can change/expose the system from within without getting corrupted will work. (Learn from Eli: have a better escape route.) And would Danny and Security Service woman believe Rachel’s set aside her principles? But this is where they could bring the series back.

Although it did mean Frank didn’t get away with all his awfulness, I’m a bit ‘eh’ on the use of Trump as a narrative technique. Sure, you have to acknowledge his influence in a contemporary drama like this, but using him as was done in Black Earth Rising for a plot twist is perhaps a little too easy for writers?
Having said that, the characters got to exercise the arguments for and against the manipulation of technology lie this, and it was a real boost for the show to get Perlman. Not that the other actors were good – but I expected Grainger to convince, Callum Turner’s nuances were a pleasant surprise.

I gave the first episode of legal comedy ‘Defending the Guilty’ a try and a combo of not caring about the hapless protagonist enough and not laughing out loud enough makes me suspect I won’t continue to bother with it. I’d like to give World on Fire a try.
