shallowness: HP films' Minerva reads the Daily Prophet (Minerva reads)
[personal profile] shallowness
I don’t normally post about books here, but I do read, if more slowly than I once did. Last week, I read ‘How The Marquis Got His Coat Back’ by Neil Gaiman, a long short story in its own swish little book. It’s a Neverwhere story, so the Marquis is the Marquis de Carrabas and, minor spoiler alert, he does get his coat back. It’s a satisfying narrative, revealing character (I could hear Patterson Joseph speaking in my mind), hints about his past, enemies he’s made, introducing someone he’d really rather didn’t rescue him. The world of London Below is expanded – it’s all factions that seem like cults - – inventively, with Gaiman’s enjoyable use of language. I enjoyed it, but the story deserved a tighter copy edit, as it couldn’t always decide if it was in British English or American English, though it should be the former, surely, as it’s set in, er, London.
