shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (shallowness heroines)
[personal profile] shallowness
Since discovering, what, days ago, that Once Upon a Time was back on telly yesterday, I have been kicking myself for not just buying the DVDs like I meant to. As I didn’t have them and couldn’t rewatch the handful of episodes I wanted to rewatch (the first, the last, Skin Deep, Snow Falls and the one that’s linked to that fic I almost forgot I drafted and put aside to check canon), I spent yesterday consuming OUAT fanworks in preparation. This included watching a fanvid with the sound turned down because I really didn’t like the song and finding more stuff to rec in the coming epic recpost (or rec posts, if I’m being realistic.) And then, thanks to electronic programming guide hi-jinx, I thought there’d been some mistake and it wasn’t on. Cue getting worked up, double checking, and then finding out that it was.

What a rollicking return! I’m reacting with heart here, because so much of this show is pure kryptonite for me. This episode added Mulan – stoic warrior lady with a sword! – to that list. Also, we had Snow and Charming instead of Mary Margaret and David – so even though James (or whatever we’re calling him by this point) cried, I didn’t mind. I may even think the actor is better than I remember him as being. And Emma freaking out at it all being true and her parents being her contemporaries! And Emma-Henry!!!

And Rumpelstiltskin/Belle!!!! Of course, the fact that they got the kissing early was a portent of things to come. But I enjoyed the development, although I’ll have to pretend she took a long bath while he was jaunting around making bad decisions calling upon what was essentially a Chinese Dementor. I hope we see her interacting with more characters soon, and am sure she will at least find out about his son, who probably had a big part to play in his decision. Realistically, I know this pairing is probably going to break me, because I don’t want it warping Belle, and I don’t want to avoid the darkness and weakness in Rumpelstiltskin (not long term, I was capable of going ‘that’s a stupid decision’ for this episode, but I won’t be episode after episode). Still, I’m happy for now.

Magic works differently here. Yuh-huh. I hope they’ve worked it out in the writer’s room. Rumpelstiltskin seemed to be doing fine, the Blue Fairy (KEEGAN CONNOR TRACY! Aww, and when will they bring Nova back for Grumpy?) and Regina couldn’t do magic – until Emma touched Regina. What does that mean? What does it mean that Regina doesn’t remember Jefferson? Either she’s lying (possible) or it’s something else (equally possible)? Intriguing.

Ruby, werewolf bodyguard. Hopefully she’ll get a cool plotline now they’ve added her to the main cast, which makes more sense to me than having Archie be a regular (sorry). Also, every time I think of her, I keep singing the Kaiser Chiefs’ ‘Ruby’ (I don’t even know.)

Starting with newcomers was brave. Who is the mysterious man in New York and what is his connection to Storybrooke and fairy tales? When will we see him in guyliner? Have the writers thought it out as well as all the other revelations about the known lands?

Aurora was a little insipid to me – yes, I know, not to be underestimated by me or Mulan, blah blah blah, but Mulan is exactly the type to make me flaily (I will be so disappointed if the next episode doesn’t involve a sword fight between her and Emma, basically). Phillip was even more beside the point. Pretty but disposable princeling.

What was intriguing was the revelation that, as far as I can work out, Emma’s arrival in Storybrooke woke the people still left in the Known Lands, who had been cursed for 28 years, actually poor sleepyhead – hope they keep up Aurora’s understandable issues with sleep. And now she and Snow (aww, Snow) are there, about to be blamed for something that isn’t their fault. I was looking forward to that family reunion, if that’s the term, all last season, so every second, throwaway perhaps, given all that was going on, made me squee.

But this episode left us with a lot of questions (if the series ends without our finding out who Dr Whale is, I will be IRKED) that I hope this season will answer. It’s already thrown a curveball by sending Emma and Snow to the Known Lands and having parallell stuff happen there.

I would normally be watching Revenge live now, but I’m an episode behind. It's one of a few shows I still need to catch up on.
