Strictly – week six

Never mind ‘journey’, it’s ‘do you know what’ that’s getting overused on ITT.
Saturday!
I liked Tess’s outfit the most, it’s the pink lining that swung it, while the others were relatively restrained. It was good to have Motsi back, although scoring-wise, we’re clearly missing a fourth judge.
Anyway, Clara opened with the first jive of the night, and it was fast, and a bit frenzied and messy, I thought. I didn’t spot the mistakes per se, (neither did Tess, who has better eyesight than I do, I'll bet, who misread the sitation) but I’m tired of her dancing, even though she and Aljiaz are entertaining together.
I’m wondering if they gave Jamie the slot of doom after a disastrous rehearsal. Karen probably had the outfit of the night (on a relatively drab one). I didn’t like the chess-playing messing abaht, too fussy, but when the dance proper started I was impressed. After three weeks of letting it go, it was interesting to see Jamie mostly manage a more restrained dance. It was good, rather than great, but absolutely deserved 8s.
Next HRVY in a dance I was intrigued to see. The AR skyscraper on the floor worked effectively, and then the dancing…from a few moves in, I was excited, and increasingly so. Excellently judged choreography, and the biggest compliment I can pay is that I was watching him, not Janette, even as he ably supported her in Janette-typical lifts. The styling (of the dance) was great. I would imagine future pop video choreographers will be Very Excited.
I was familiar with what GOAT stands for, so I was a step ahead of the puzzled studio after Craig dropped it. Motsi, in particular made up for Craig’s paucity of comments. And then the producers made HRVY cry with a live link to his family, in this of all years. First 10 from Craig (I was all ‘you’d better’), and thus the full house, and was amused at the collapsing celebrations. Presumably all the couples have decided that they’re going to make Clauda scuttle for laughs.
I had notes on Ranivr and Giovanni’s outfits – Vicki Gill seems to have decided Ranvir is going to be the one who gets patterns, but I think one of them needed a lighter top, because those colours were neither matching nor quite complementary. Anyway, Giovanni again trusted her to do solo work, which was lovely, and then there was a scrummy frame and a gorgeous mood. I liked the approval for improvement from Shirley. I disagreed with Craig about the lift, because I thought they worked with the mood of the routine, though I take the points about Gio being a little predictable. And though I know I’m being maneuvered into it by the choreography (and the Dirty Dancing nod in the VT), I disagreed enough with Craig to decide to vote for them then, pretty much.
Was it Bill next? The fake news broadcast VT was so bad. Anyway, some good stuff – his legwork mostly impressed me. Again, I didn’t spot the mistakes (jive 2 – celebs 0) but it was clearly better than Clara’s. A bit like last week, in that it was slightly disappointing for me compared to his very best.
Next JJ and this week’s outfit (I was expecting to be told whether the Chalmers have a tartan. But honestly, has there ever been such a fuss over a male celeb’s clothes?) Amy’s SKIRT had been catching my eye all evening, so I have to admit that I was not quite in the mood the judges were in after worrying about what would happen when she got out of hold after it flew up – VG mst be mortified. I thought it was a JJ ballroom i.e good, the judges thought it was great. And then they did ‘break the contestant by showing them their family’ again.
Nice timing to have Maisie’s old school supporting her, but I kept thinking ‘and all that bubble are going to have to go off if one of them tests positive’. Gorka probably had the best male dancer outfit of the night, and Maisie’s otherwise bland dress worked well in contrast. You could quickly see why she’d got the final spot. A very high-quality dance, though there was too much (excellent) dancing on the bench for my taste. She was so graceful and all over it, but I wanted more quickstep content myself. Craig reverted to usual Craig and wouldn’t give her a 10. I was left wondering if properly second was safe.
But with a bunch of people at 24, I stuck to my intentions, and though HRVY’s dance was my favourite, voted for Ranvie and Giovanni.
Straight after Strictly, I watched 'On The Town' on iPlayer, which was a good call.
Strictly Results
Great routine (although a similar overall concept to the Halloween one?), with the lit-up poles and fluorescent clothing working really well. The only dodgy bit was the transition of Grazzianno from playing the game to being inside it and back, which feels apt for Stritly.
At first sight, I liked Tess’s outfit more than Claudia’s, but the detailing of Claudia’s outfit grew on me as the episode went on. Motsi went full Quality Street (because Advent has started?), which I appreciate.
Fair recap, grouping the 24s together, then going to Clara and then the top three. Waiting for the first results, I spent a lot of time thinking Harvey’s outfit is actually quite ugly, but not even Aljiaz could save that brown verlour top. No, not even with that quiff. Lovely for Maisie to be saved first. Alas, poor Jamie, but if he wasn’t against Bill cleaning up his mistakes, I wasn’t too worried for him, even though he stopped making sense during his comments. Motsi’s advice seemed helpful.
Whoa, those young Latin ‘The Greatest Dancer’ winners basically put on a showdance. At one point, I was like ‘what are you even doing?’ It was one of the later spins. Gymnastic and acrobatic but still dancing. Obviousl they were trying to impress/terrify the pros, and possibly the producers.
Dance debrief was not that informative, but the clip of HRVY’s family was sweet.
I’d expected Gary Barlow to do his big bang number, not the trio all on his own. So, Johannes has bubbled with Luba now? I actually found Grazziano and Nadiya more impressive, they did more daring stuff and looked better rehearsed, though they’ve been dancing together for weeks.
I’d thought that if Clara was in the bottom two (as she should be) they’d let her know second. The two couples in the dance-off were equally likeable, but Jamie has danced better overall,. Anyway, Clara did clean up the routine, which was fast enough to exhaust Alkiaz, but I still felt it was to frenzied, while Jamie brought the intensity again, proving the first time hadn’t been a one-off. I thought it was close, but I am fascinated that Craig let his love for Clara (and the Claraston) blind him to the mistake that Motsi saw, but Shirley didn’t mention it either, although her decision finally got to be the decider. Jamie looked mightily relieved and more with it than Karen.
