4.13 The Oath

This ought to be remembered as the episode in which Bill and Laura’s coupledom made everyone uncomfortable. But also it was about an uprising – Adama called it treason, but with the mess that was the civilian leadership, I don’t know about that. Anyway, Felix acted on his agreement to revolt with Verek and really was the perfect person in to use misinformation to freeze the command, although the focus was on whether he really had the guts/lack of scruples to be a revolutionary. He couldn’t resort to violence as easily as Verek (or Kara in particular).

Had he looked at who was on his side – Verek, marines and minor characters the show expected me to remember interacting with Sam or whoever that time - he might have realised he was on the losing side, although I liked that Lee admitted that Felix HAD A POINT. Lee lost me when he got into Tighe’s face about all the Cylons’ crimes ever, (see previous ep). But the more Adama tried to get random marines to rember they were military, the more he ignored the legitimacy of their concerns about his previous actions.

One resounding question for me was what about Mikey. Has Tyrol really ditched him and let him be Hotdog’s responibility? (Also, I let out a bark of laughter at Hotdog dishing it right back to Kara. Don’t start something you can’t take, Starbuck. Also 2, I totally rolled my eyes at her snogging Lee after a jolt of adrenaline. After everything, I just can’t with them as much as the show wants me to.)

Good use of Baltar, because oh yes, he was so very reluctant to take up his acolytes’ suggestion that he leave Galactica for his own safety, when to me it seemed more likely that Tyrol was in danger. Laura called Baltar out on it, Laura who was starting to remember she was a politican and had some solutions for the mess that Bill reported at the outset. At least she stepped up when the Galactica started ripping itself apart. Clever use of Gaius’s broadcast – and in silencing her voice, Felix really was proving that he was just as bad as those he was accusing. I wasn’t sure if I bought Gaius bringing up New Caprica and this as an attempt by Felix to atone – nice try to make us believe you remember all the past and that this is a coherent whole, writers. But just what’s happened recently seemed enough to drive him.

Having said that, when Sam was tricked, knocked out and taken, I recognised that it was the same kind of ‘justice’ that some of the Four had tried to mete out after New Caprica, so there was a sense of the cycle continuing.

Caprica tried to make it out that everyone was superworried about her baby, while Athena tried to teach her how to have some concern for your chid’s welfare. But, maybe because it was Caprica and she had the shared dream, Athena wasn’t triggered by a Six getting too close to Hera. And that was about all Athena got to do, really, give or take hovering over a hurt Helo.

Lee is allowed to be more freaked out by his dad snogging Roslin than Tighe was at their sleeping arrangements. I know I was meant to be really worried about the two defenders (a real western feel to that end sequence) while waiting for the next episode, given the ordinance thrown at them, but I’m really not.

4.14 Blood on the Scales

I was a bit confused at times during the second part of the insurrection. Far from shockingly, Adama and Tighe survived, although kudos to Verek for later lying to Adama that Tighe was dead to demoralise him, although trying the same routine on Roslin over her boyfriend and threatening her to him were far more counterproductive.

But I had no idea what Tyrol was up to (or was he crawling around the Galactica to get the FTL drive to all episode? Kudos for stopping it before the very final second, which makes a change.) I still wondered where Mikey was, given that he was mentioned, and we were left to wonder whether having a son and the new bond with Tyrol were part of the reason why Hotdog hesitated over his orders.

Where did half of the rescued prisoners go? Let’s hope Helo got some treatment. Actually, the hope of getting Sam to Cottle was a bit optimistic when you thought about it.

Kara’s unwillingness to let Sam bleed out was vindication for my eyeroll at the Kara/Lee kiss in the previous episode. (Apollo not pulling out the pin from the grenade was a little funny, Kara).

They even drew Lambkin into matters ever further. He had some plausible self-interested deniability in his stint as Adama’s involuntary lawyer, and stalling was a perfectly viable tactic, except Adama was furious about Felix and the insurrection and ignoring the fact that he had not always had right on his side.

But the trial was a joke and made it clear that Felix was out for, admit it or not, payback for all the wrongs he’d suffered, I guess. But he really did have to face up to the price of revolution in what Verek had done to the Quorum. For that on top of everything, I was past arguing with the final firing squad.

Before that, there was some harping back to Gaius (possibly) having visions again. I was confused by the brunette Six on the basestar deciding to be so into him. (I was grateful for the clarification that it was an Eight, possibly Memory!Athena, who had flown the rescue raptor.) Once again, the lack of budget for special guest star D’Anna was noticeable. They could afford He Has a Nama and Tori (and Tori interacting with Rosin has value). So I’m preparing to raise an eyebrow when bossypants D’Anna appears again and tries to be their leader.

Anyway, Baltar expressed some contrition at running again and a sense of responsibility for his acolytes, even if he admitted to looking down at them, so his personal growth continues. The scene between Gaius and Felix felt a little strained for me, I could see what they were trying to do, and they gave Felix a big old send off, but there was a lot of mumbling going on, which was irritating.

So, a depleted fleet, with its divisions laid bare continues on its slightly directionless way along with some Cylons. Who seemed massively indifferent to the Caprica-Tighe offspring (and Hera.) Possibly with a more engaged Laura Roslin at the helm, though, with only Lee (new Veep?) left of the Quorum.
