I really liked what you said about how what happens with Donna's diary and private life expounds on what the Bartlets are facing.
the shipper in me loves that Josh ... 2. gets to read Donna's diary, where she's probably said embarrassing things about him. It's horrible and delightful.
I hadn't really taken that in, and I'm not entirely sure that the episode supports this, although I could be wrong. Did Josh mention having read it himself when he assured Cliff there wasn't any smoking gun in it? Because nothing about Donna's behaviour so far has suggested that she had aything to say about Bartlet's MS in the diary, and okay, maybe Josh wouldn't have taken it on trust after what had just happened, but beyond making sure that he did have the copies of the entries relating to Cliff it hadn't occrred to me that Josh would have read it. But yeah, if he did, that's horrifying (and delighftul).
And the penny storyline is just dumb. I read a rumor years ago that that storyline is what started Rob Lowe's feeling disgruntled with the show, and honestly...fair.
Yes, it does seem fair. I alwas felt there was a tension between Rob Lowe, Movie Star's special place in the credits and the fact that the show was an ensmble, and once they grasped that Martin Sheen's President should be an integral part of the story, his movie starriness wasn't as shiny. All the other actors are so good (not saying that Lowe isn't), but Charlie and Donna aside, they're more senior characters and have more interesting storylines to delve into. There was talk about there being a possibility of Sam/Connie on the podcast, although based on what we saw on screen, it seems like a non-starter. Even if I'm not as shippy for Sam/Ainsley as they are on the podcast, they have more sizzle, but Josh is clearly the first go-to for romances because of the inevitable drama thanks to the Josh/Donna. So, that's another less likely development for Sam's character, so, yeah, Lowe's frustration is plausible.
I look forward to following Abbey's storylines, definitely, plus seeing more of the Abbey-Oliver double-act.
