shallowness: Fred and Ginger dancing in foregroud, him in tails, her in a dark gown, background a white circle (moon or spotlight) (Fred and Ginger dancing)
[personal profile] shallowness
It occurred to me that I could rewatch Rhys’s Argentine tango on my laptop, so I did, noticing more details, and it played uninterrupted, and then I rewatched Rose’s American smooth for good measure.

SO this results show really pleased me altogether. I had a slight niggle that the pro routine was referencing something specific that I wasn’t getting. Who were the two leading ladies being? Velma and Roxy from Chicago in an eighties AU? (Could that even work?) That Robert Plant video was being referenced, right? I couldn’t quite get the questions out of my head, but I enjoyed the routine.

Enter Tess, slightly echoing some of the routine’s looks, Claudia reverting to white blouse and black trousers after wearing red, Shirley in lotsa red and with big hair, Motsi showing off her shoulders again, Anton veering into colour, making Craig the boring one.

Fair recap, which reflected that the bottom three had had positives but also boo-boos, and then according Rose and the more surprising Rhys all the praise and celebration they deserved.

First set of results, and the first to be called safe was RHYS! Big celebrations, after everything, totally deserved. Also pleasingly, because it was deserved, Rose was called safe. But AJ was in the dance off, which she knew was fair, and she got good advice from Shirley. Ooh, Rhys has got a samba, but also a tango. We were reminded that Gio is the most experienced pro at this stage, as if we hadn’t known, and I am tantalised by Rose doing the Argentine tango.

JLS sang about postcards, which feels apt, as they’re well into manband territory, if not early middle age. Nice harmonies, and the pro pairing that has delighted me all season, Neil and Dianne, were at it again, doing some cool and interesting stuff. I know both would have loved to compete longer, but they’ve been ace.

Judges’ debrief, where, again, Claudia was all ‘MOTSI U R BACK. S’WONDERFUL!’ and there was the promised expansion, with Shirley given time to try to redeem her comment about Rose blocking out the commotion after Rhys’s dance, by nodding to the fact that she knew Rose wouldn’t have heard it, and saying that she’d seen her be aware of it, but still focused. We also saw a slo-mo clip of Rose’s leap of faith, and then we saw the salsa lift disasters (with bonus judges chortling) and oh dear. Even I could see they were bad.

I thought AJ had more of a chance if she went against Dan, because she mainly needed to tidy up the lifts, but so did John, and FOR ONCE IT WAS THE BOTTOM TWO IN THE DANCE OFF. This pleased me. (It also means John and Rose have never been in danger.) Craig’s advice to Dan was less useful than Shirley’s to AJ’s, I felt, but Nadiya has had more experience of the dance-off than Kai (suddenly his first series that dreams are made of was overshadowed.)

I tried looking out for what Anton had been complaining of in Dan’s dance, and there was a bit of inappropriate rise and fall. Big cheers from Nancy and respect from Kai, FWIW. But AJ’s mistakes had been more obvious – did they change a bit of the choreography towards the start when they came together? Anyway, she was on it and the first squiffy lift was so much better and then the final one that had gone so awry went so so so much better. She did the routine the way she was meant to, and reasserted that she was the better dancer, for me. All four judges agreed, and Dan had been realistic enough to know that if he was in the dance off he’d go and delivered a wonderful last few words, as did Nadiya. Nice nods to past dances in their Last Dance. Rhys seemed to be standing alone as he applauded them – I wonder if he and Nancy felt like they needed to practice social distancing for their sanity after having to be so up close in their AT. PLEASE let Flavia be able to do choreography corner as we were denied Vincent’s opinion of John’s AT last week. (No offence to Oti.)
On ITT, Dan seemed accepting of his ejection from the competition – for the integrity of dahnce. Nadiya got to talk a litte more, and kind of let slip that benig paired with terrile dancers she hadn’t been able to bring on had been hard – and in fairness, couples choice aside, I thought her choreography shone, so I hope she gets a ringer next year. And on ITT Tuesday, Flavia confirmed that a light-footed salsa isn’t as good as a grounded salsa.
