Lavon seemed to think he’d done well by arranging for a college spring break tour to call at Bluebell. Zoe was sceptical, rejected Dr Jonah’s latest offer of sex (she has rejected him about half a dozen times and still he continues. Not attractive.) Then Walt responded to her suggestion that he cut down on his hours for his health by saying he was actually considering selling the Rammer-Jammer.
He laughed in Wade’s face when said he could be a potential buyer (serves Wade right). Lemon was also toying with the idea with AB, who said she’d help but not be a business partner (so their catering company remains done). Lemon decided that she wouldn’t ask her father for financial backing. While Lemon rebuilding her life after the wedding was called off and struggling for independence has been a regular thing all season, wanting to run the bar felt like an impetuous response to the opportunity coming up.
AB had turned down Lavon’s shy offer of restarting things because she was prioritising rebuilding her relationship with Lemon, but as the previouslies’ had suggested, Ruby was back in town, and Lavon shyly suggested coffee with his ex during a conversation that she rightly described as awkward.
George turned out to have quite the hate on Jonah, which he’d never expressed while under Lemon’s thumb. Jonah…didn’t care very much. Anyway, all this was buildup to George witnessing Zoe yielding to Dr Persistent, and saying that fine, she would let Jonah try to cheer her up by destroying some brain cells. She’d been inspired by Walt saying life was too short to have no fun.
And I was left to contrast all that with the sizzle as Wade mocked Zoe for wearing what they called a ‘fanny-pack’ and to be a careful little party animal.
The threat of Philmore stealing the spring breakers led to Ruby suggesting she sponsor a hand on the boat competition (!?) The prize money for which made Wade and Lemon join in and in their different ways, get rid of all the college-aged competitors until a real threat popped up. Wasn’t hard to work out where this would end up. It was notable that Lemon just hated Ruby as a general rival, while Annabeth seemed more upset by her proximity to Lavon.
Meanwhile George just had to phone Zoe to explain that Brick would not be turning up to relieve her of doctoring duties for the big date. Jonah suggested that George, who had already stepped out of line in trying to warn him off Zoe, was sabotaging their date. She defended George (and Jonah seemed surprised to learn that he might have to work a little for there to be sex as part of the date) until an injured Brick finally turned up and revealed George had certainly suggested they took the scenic route back from their fishing. Zoe stormed to over to the houseboat to rail at him…in Tansy’s hearing. George had to argue that it was just because he mistrusted Jonah – Zoe gave him what for verbally – and he didn’t look like he’d convinced Tansy that he wasn’t jealous of potential Zoe/Jonah.
(If I’m meant to pick sides between Jonah and George, the answer is neither.)
George got an inkling that something was up with Brick, and then more than an inkling when Shelby came to him to say she was worried about Brick. This meant we learned that George had convinced Tansy and that Tansy had enough sass to be rude to Shelby to her face, but why didn’t Shelby say all this to Zoe? Or Jonah? They’re the ones with medical degrees.
Obviously, it was so that George could interrupt Zoe and Jonah’s spontaneous fun by sharing what he knew of Brick’s symptoms. They cornered Brick as doctors and got him to arrange an MRI scan the next day, but he insisted he didn’t want Shelby to know, because she might think she’d moved in with an old crock.
In the meantime, Lemon and Wade combined to see off their rival, and Lemon had an unselfish moment and noticed AB’s distress about Lavon/Ruby, although she tried to mask it. Lemon and AB couldn’t hear what was said, but Ruby told Lavon to think about the prospect of them again (even though it would still be Dallas vs. Bluebell.
Zoe conveniently decided to go against Brick’s wishes and came to tell an exhausted Lemon about Brick’s MRI. Lemon conferred with AB, who told her Brick’s health was more important. Wade could hear all this and conceded the competition just as Lemon did because he’s not entirely a selfish jerk (and while so much of this episode was clunky, they had worked in a mention of Wade’s dad earlier into the competition.)
Shelby knew to come to the hospital anyway. I…didn’t understand why George was there. Anyway the whole party filling up the waiting room pretended not to hear Lemon FINALLY admitting she’d been a selfish friend to AB and urged her to go get her Lavon, which seems to have put the kibosh on Lemon/Lavon. (For now? For good?) AB turned up at Lavon’s door again, only it was more sweet than saucy as Lavon said that he’d already told Ruby he’d moved on.
Oh, George was there to tell Zoe he was jealous of Jonah, but not like that. (Except it was totally like that. Sigh. RUN, TANSY, IT’S NOT WORTH IT.) And he and Jonah were just getting into a fight over what they call chips and I was thinking I’d seen variations of this before when Brick emerged, saw the horde (there against his wishes) and said what he had was fine and treatable. I don’t buy it.
It occurred to Lemon and Wade that if they pooled their winnings they could buy the bar together. This could work, because she will boss him into stepping up, and he won’t let her get everything her own way.
Zoe and Jonah had ‘fun’ or she got tipsy while he stayed sober because he was leaving for his new job, and then spouted some pro Zoe/George guff. If that last moment where Zoe flashed Jonah was meant to be read as empowering, er, no. [Edited for typos 29/5/25.]
