There is clearly a drop-off in season 5, but I didn't loathe it all the first time around, although it's mostly season 7 that left its mark on me of the latter seasons. I dislike that they're bringing in more tension between our team, even if it's more realistic, and certainly that various characters (Toby, Josh and Donna) are looking to take on more responsibilities is more realistic. That Donna and other women are getting treated more roundly and with more insight coming from more female perspectives is a good thing.
I would fall back a little on the diplomatic cliche that it was brave to try to do so much that Sorkin wouldn't. I don't mean it entirely disparagingly, either. That's probably better than trying to do an impersonation of someone else's voice, and yet it was that vision that made the show beloved for four seasons, so it was always going to be tricky.
