The Masked Singer Christmas special

I had no interest in watching the I’m A Celebrity Masked Singer special, but a Christmas special as a taster for the next series of the daftly surreal show (which starts tonight)? Yes, please.

Big opening where we had a brief glimpse or snippet of the four masked singers (who seemed neither terrible nor brilliant) before Leona Lewis sang her Christmas song ‘on top of’ a Christmas tree, before joining the panel as a guest judge with gloves and one big bow outmatching the bows on Davina’s dress. Joel wore a Santa smoking jacket and hat. The puns were present and correct, but poor him, he had to sing a lot of them…in front of Leona Lewis (and Rita Ora.)

Partridge (in a pear tree) essayed a Scottish accent and Davina had to gently point out to Leona that it was probably fake. The clues were all over the place, and about as helpful as ever i.e. not very as you can’t know all the biographical details of all the celebs. Partridge went for a kind of mix of talking and singing that sounded theatrical. FWIW, I guessed David Walliams, but not that confidently.

I liked Brussel Sprout’s costume more, was completely bamboozled by the clues, and then he started singing Good King Wenceslas, with supporting mice in churchy garments (because of course) before starting to rap in an older white Englishman kind of way. I felt like I knew the voice, but had no guesses. I rather thought Jonathan’s guess of Tony Robinson might be right.

As Partridge had the better voice, I was relieved he got voted through. Two sing-offs seemed like the best way to manage it.

I wasn’t that impressed by Decorations’ costume, but it was notable that their singing voice was a lot like their talking voice. And not a great voice, so it was good that Rita and Leona started singing along. I would have said Julian Clary, but without much conviction, so when the singers guessed Alan Carr, I went along with that.

Reindeer had a better cartoony costume, although I wasn’t sure what to think of the umbrellas rather than antlers. That wasn’t a bad exaggerated Welsh accent and dialogue, but Carol Vorderman doesn’t have that accent and that was Gaelic (wouldn’t swear to it being Irish or Scottish on the sign.) (ETA it was later explained that it was both under the English.) Anyway, they were the only celeb to sing properly and not too shabbily. I think Vorderman could sing in that register, but…I’m not convinced (if you were guessing a Carol, Carol Kirkwood as a weatherwoman would make more sense for the mentions of rain and the umbrellas than Carol Smilie.)

Quite rightly, Reindeer was saved.

And I’d been right with my original guess about who Decorations was, and Davina, who’d worked with Julian Clary, was humiliated. He’d beaten the panel.

Partridge’s second performance was less good vocally, and made me less convinced my guess was right. Obviously, there were sheep playing guitars and flirty golden Tiller girls as part of the performance, and like the judges said, he was confident on stage.

Reindeer’s second performance was also less good vocally, although I was now convinced that it was Carol Vorderman. This time there were dancers dressed as sexy Mrs Santas and two Christmas trees, while the judges entertained themselves by throwing fake snowballs at each other. The clues made Davina double down on Carol Vorderman and pointed Jonathan to Carol Kirkwood. I hope they have better singers on the series proper.

The audience voted Partridge (In a Pear Tree) as the winner, probably because he’d put on more of a performance and maybe because they were less sure who it was. Mo joined Davina in guessing CV for Reindeer, while the other judges stuck to their original guesses and turned out to be wrong.

Another clue for Partridge, which didn’t help at all, and then we got the reveal that it was Ainsley Harriot, which crushed Mo, because he’s usually his go-to guess. Very exuberant unmasked performance and a quick clip of some mad, mad costumes for the upcoming series.
