shallowness: Natasha looking down smiling (Natasha Endgame)
[personal profile] shallowness
Happy new year!

I'm delighted to say I saw seven movies in the cinema in 2023, one more than in 2020. (I hadn't been to the cinema since early March 2020, started going again in the early summer this year.) Here they are in chronological order.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – a satisfying close to the trilogy, with Rocket’s affecting backstory running alongside the reunited team’s attempt to save him involving the usual madness.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning part 1 – worth seeing in the cinema simply for the stunts. Timely AI villain. Hailey Atwood made a fun addition to the team, but the fate of another character left a bad taste.

Barbie – I really enjoyed the moments of tenderness among the satire and silliness as well as the musical numbers, the cine-literacy. This is a film that remembers how girls played, and I had many moment of recognition as I watched it. Ryan Gosling made me laugh a lot, while Margot Robbie was the movie’s beating heart.

Oppenheimer – intelligent, serious, gripping, the biopic via hearings framework worked. Good to see a film like this be a hit (a lot of friends who don’t go much to the cinema went to see it) and Murphy get to be the lead.

The Creator – a lot was made of this being an original sci-fi action movie, although its influences are plain to see. It worked for me emotionally, via the hero’s relationship with sim/AI child Alphie, although a few things didn’t quite hold together.

Anatomy of a Fall – intelligent, tense film about a case where a wife and mother was put on trial. Fascinating look at family dynamics, gender roles, autobiography in fiction and language.

Wonka – a funny, charming film you could take the whole family to. Chalamet turns out to have ‘song and dance man’ in his toolbox, and was surrounded by British comic talent in this prequel about the chocolatier. (The songs were fine, but outclassed by the ones from the 70s film.)

Most of them were movies that did well in the UK. Only two were directed by women (who'd also co-written them) and they were the only two films with female leads. Fancy that! I should also state that I was able to watch a few movies that were released in 2023 on streaming, of which I especially rated Everything, Everywhere All At Once and Women Talking. I hope I'll be able to go see more movies in the cinema this year.
