Hart of Dixie - 3.15 Ring of Fire

It’s been a while, so I needed those previouslies, which seemed to be mainly taken up by Lemon’s two boyfriends dilemma. AB was trying to point out that she ought to pick one, Lemon said she couldn’t, which seemed to be a sign that she that she had no interest in. Of course, the townspeople had made t-shirts declaring which team they were on. They seemed more interested in Tall Rich White Southerner vs. Less Tall More Artistic Spaniard than in buying tickets for Lavon’s Renaissance Fayre. George tried to point out that Lavon had been going overboard with town events to distract himself from the break-up and there might be a little fatigue. As it turned out, more people were worried about how George was reacting to Tansy dumping him again.

Given the latter detail, I was puzzled as to why the show decided to bring back the Truitt brothers, other than they’re agents of chaos. (But it’s not like the show is lacking in those. As Joel pointed out, Zoe, the main character, has form in this regard.) Joel had decided to ask them to do the plumbing for Termite House on the cheap. Zoe was rightly going, ‘WAIT, WHAT?’ The inevitable happened, the one named ‘Chicken’, apparently, fell off a ladder. Zoe checked him out, dispensing with some usual cognitive tests because Truitt brother, but said he was mostly fine. But one of his brothers happened to overhear Joel announcing the film rights for his book (I think the second one he wrote in Bluebell that hasn’t been published, but I don’t care) had been sold, thanks to Zoe’s mother, for six figures. Next thing Zoe and Joel know, they’ve been served for negligence causing Chicken’s injury.

Sweet, naïve Joel thought he could talk to his former kidnappers, now friends and get them to drop it. Zoe was for trusting George and the legal process. But George was having difficulties, after embarrassing himself in front of a pretty lady who turned out to be opposing counsel and something involving Lily singing songs she’d written about his sad, loser summer. He came through in the end and won the ridiculous case, but went into unpleasant winner George territory.

In the middle of all this, Chicken had let it be known that he’d drop the case for fifty bucks and a date with Annabeth. Despite some moral quibbles about using their friend this way, Joel and Zoe set up a date with AB who was in such a state (Lavon had asked her to do him a favour and ask Lemon to let her two beaux ‘duel’ in public as the main draw of his Renaissance Fayre. As she said acidly, after everything, he was asking her to do him a favour) that she went along. But the other brothers Truitt stopped Chicken in case it endangered their payday and so she was stood up, and sunk even lower emotionally.

It’s fairly barrel-scraping to have a character called Chicken, when you have a Meatball (who is arguably a comedy version of Wade) already. And have Meatball turn up in this episode! For, after fainting from exhaustion (I thought she’d just tripped because she’d said ‘yes’ to too much wine), Lemon agreed to the duel. BUT! Meatball saw his chance, told the two beaux lies about the other’s sword-fighting prowess, meaning that they were too chicken, if you will, to turn up and fight, leaving the field clear for him.

‘Queen’ Lemon gave Lavon the ‘I can’t believe you put ME in this position’ sour face, so Sir Mayor Lavon Hayes turned up and disarmed Meatball without having to do much, meaning that he’d get the prize of escorting Queen Lemon. She dumped both beaux (who’d come to a new business arrangement) and returned to dance with Lavon, who said she’d find true love one day (bah, I like Lemon more when her plotlines involve her being gainfully employed.) When they both saw AB wandering about sadly, they stopped dancing and went a-mingling.

But a mystery knight (not Meatball, not Chicken, probably not George, and not the very capable knight who’d thrashed Tom earlier in the episode) came up and offered AB a drink and an ego boost. (Huh, what with the new face of lawyer lady and this, maybe we are not headed where I thought on the George and AB front, or not now, but I’m still expecting Lemon/Lavon.)

By the way, a lot of these scenes were happening in Fancies, which has been decabaretised and is back to being a fancy restaurant, although I have no idea who is running it. Because it isn’t Lemon.

Wade was lost in a subplot involving an attempted three month anniversary date with Vivian, thwarted by Harley, destroyer of babysitters. Wade had suggested Rose (hi, Rose.) I expected Harley getting an inappropriate but ‘amusing’ crush on Rose, but instead they engaged in some goat kidnapping because the owner of some goats for the Renaissance Fayre kept threatening to turn this kid into goat meat. Wade had to balance keeping Harley onside, Lavon onside, and eventually masterminded a plan that led to Tom and Wanda being foster parents for the rescued goat. Aww. This nonsense featured Wade carrying a cute little goat around a bit.

The episode ended with Joel having another phone call, telling him he needed to go to LA for six months to help with the script. On the one hand, I don’t think it works like that, but given everything else that happened in this episode and this show’s relationship with reality, whatever. On the more pertinent hand, I really don’t care. I don’t know why they’ve given him so much screen time – but wriggling out of Wade sucking up to a brat because he is serious about a single mom who happens to be Zoe’s cousin is going to be much harder to write themselves out of to reach my desired endgame. Also, it keeps undermining my involvement in any new characters (like the lawyer lady, like the mystery knight.) But PLEASE let them not bring back Jonah.
