3.17 A Good Run of Bad Luck

Zoe had to face life without Joel, which seemed to have brought about a comb allergy. Because men were rude to her, or little men threw frisbees in inappropriate places, and because of the whole emotional state, she was open to Wanda’s suggestion that she go to see a psychic. Oh, and George had confided in her that he’d slept with Lemon and kept having flashbacks to the sex (actually the foreplay), although, overall, his feelings for Lemon hadn’t changed. Lemon had decided to confide in Lavon. (Ouch. But more seriously, one of my major questions with this episode was ‘why not tell AnnaBeth, LEMON?’ I mean, I kind of know why, the writers were resetting back to s1 apart from one thing, and also keeping the subplots separate.)

The ’psychic’ told Zoe that by stopping a wedding she was cursed (or something. Even in her state Zoe pointed out that stopping George and Lemon’s wedding hadn’t been much of her fault, and Lavon would also point out that it was a while ago.) But Zoe bought it eventually, decided to hear what she wanted from what George had said and bring him and Lemon (who was about where George had been, unable to forget – hence the same old flashbacks being repeated to the point that they were tiresome – but doubting that she had softer feelings for her ex. Also, being Lemon, she was unloading that on Lavon, without acknowledging that they have unfinished business/unexamined feelings) together.

Despite Lavon warning her off and George and Lemon radiating awkwardness around each other, Zoe went on meddling, leading to luring the co-restaurant owners to another restaurant under false pretences. She and Lavon watched from a distance as the laughing at old memories turned into simmering tensions over Lemon’s habit of ordering fish and then sending it back. Soon, they were arguing, Zoe was busted and the whole sorry saga of the psychic came out. (I have a vague memory that Lemon herself contacted her.) But it was all because Zoe was really sad about Joel! Lavon had to deal with the brunt of that, although Zoe eventually reached a point where she acknowledged that Joel had chosen to go and she’d chosen Bluebell. TRUTH. Let’s not have two or three more eps of wallowing.

Lemon and George had the talk they’d been avoiding, and because he was still having flashbacks, George said it’d be better if he were a silent partner and they kept their distance (so Lemon gets what she wants, ugh.)

Meanwhile we met Harley’d dad and Vivian’s ex, who I’m going to call Beardy, after some possibly unwise advice from Wade about how to deal with a bully at school had got Harley a black eye. The men had a manly ego struggle, under the unimpressed gaze of Vivian and her lesbian aunt, but having made themselves ridiculous, came to a détente? Beardy seemed to think that Wade was years younger than Vivian (emotionally, maybe, though he’s trying, but not agewise.) Also there were references to Vivian (and George) having a midlife crisis. THEY’RE IN THEIR THIRTIES.

Furthermore, why was there no mention of Zoe being invited to the Wilkes family gathering? I can see why she might not go, being in the middle of a zany plan to hide emotional pain, but that felt lax.

In the other subplot, AB was being unimpressed about a patient (a young man possibly called Davis) who kept visiting the surgery. In fact, she was aggressively calling him a hypochondriac, to the point that Brick told her off. When Davis didn’t go to Mobil for blood tests (which AB, who has no medical training, didn’t think he needed) Brick forced her to drive him there. When she went to call on him, he played for time, and eventually admitted what I’d already guessed (more from the set up than the way the actor played it, TBH) that he’d been faking his headaches and had been too chicken to ask AB out. For he had been the knight from the Ren Fayre nonsense! Brick had to talk to the overwhelmed and still heartsore AB into giving it a try, (that doesn’t really track with flirting with the French deputy mayor) so, with her help, Davis asked her out to a black-tie fundraiser (score!) for his uncle, the Mayor of Philmore’s re-election. (Oh. And even if AB didn’t have history with the mayor and his missus, how is Davis living in Bluebell and unaware of the feud with Philmore? That doesn’t say much for his smarts.)
