Mr & Mrs Smith - 1.4 Double Date

With a day off, the couple go to a farmers’ market (or summat) where John bumps into an ex, now with a kid, introduces her to Jane. I wait for the ex to use John’s birth name, nothing doing, but Jane later claims she only has one hand. John is like, ‘No, she has two…doesn’t she? She always did…didn’t she?’ I hadn’t noticed, but presumed she was able-bodied, and wasn’t bothered enough to rewind.

It would be the other person they’d meet at the farmer’s market who’d have more of an impact on the episode. Confusion over a juice John had ordered led to him meeting another John Smith, older, suave, and when our John clocked his bank card, he realised he was Another Smith. Introductions were made to Jane, older John Smith invited himself and his Jane over for dinner. I was all ‘don’t text your address’, but our Smiths were all for it, and went all newlywed couple worrying about having older colleagues over for dinner and looking to their best advantage.

Older Jane was Parker Posey, and there was this odd mix of showing off, the older couple seeming cool but worried about their age cramping that, some work talk and booze-fuelled hilarity. John and Jane were way too open, I thought, but we learned that Older John had had another Jane and been rematched, and they thought our Smiths’ ‘plan’ to accrue some money and leave The Company was hilarious. The older Smiths were apparently doing Super High Risk work (is that a thing? thought I.) And there were suggestions that delivering packages as our Smiths had done was Low Risk/infra dig. Not sure I followed the dialogue fully there, as at a couple of other points during the episode.

The Older Smiths suddenly saw the time and were off on a mission, with much alcohol in their veins. Jane was shocked, but when the older couple invited them along, she was the most in favour of going. I thought it was a terrible idea, but they wouldn’t have had a rest of the episode, otherwise. Buzzy drive, where the Smiths were given trackers, then as they and some bags were pushed into a helicopter, it was apparent to the viewer what would happen a beat or two before John and Jane.

They were to be dropped off in a heavily forested area and extracted in 30 minutes. I hadn’t quite caught what they were meant to be doing. The next few minutes were sketched out (this show’s approach to action is…singular.) Bare bones, it wasn’t as they’d been told, there were youngsters with guns, John told Jane he loved her and she replied in kind before…violence with machetes. They killed the chief? Got away with the skin of their teeth? I infer. John had a tense chat with the older Smiths over a videocall on the flight back.

After they’d got home, our Smiths debriefed, realised the Older Smiths were horrible, must have bewitched them and laughed. In between, they sorted out some serious stuff – John realising Jane had been jealous of his ex and lied about the one-handedness, but regardless, bought her repeating that she loved him and vulnerability that she needed him to repeat it too. (I’m not saying I don’t buy it, but I bear Jane’s manipulation in mind more than John. So I guess the distance between me and the protagonists and, indeed, the show continues.)

Had to look the actor playing Other John, Wagner Moura, up, but then I haven’t seen the vast majority of films that he’s in.
