Hart of Dixie - 3.22 Second Chances

As out-there, contrived and imperfect as ever, which seems fitting for a season finale for this show. George decided he was done with being Lemon’s silent partner after the insurance company wouldn’t pay for the damage to Fancie’s, having decided it was her fault. She accepted it, but felt she had to rally Bluebell to do the best that it could for the three ‘weddings’ (one was a renewal of vows) that Fancie’s had been supposed to host. In a bit of good news to cling on to, Tom and Wanda announced they were finally going to have some alpacas and a baby.

What I really liked about this episode was the female kinship (the male characters were good friends to each other, but it mainly revolved around treating the TV golfer Don Todd as a guru and avoiding real life.) Zoe started hiccoughing as she denied she was upset that Wade was leaving. It took Lemon – PLEASE lean into their fremnity in the next and last series, show – to be blunt about Zoe’s feelings for Wade. Aw, Lemon, didn’t know you were one of us Zade shippers.

Overhearing Zoe finally admit she loves Wade? Joel (who seemed relaxed and tanned), back for his gran’s wedding, who was more fine with it than Zoe because he was seeing someone else. He delighted Tom by being back in town, and agreed to be Zoe’s friendly plus one to the first wedding.

That would be Meatball and Lilyanne’s. Before it we had a scene (where it looked to me like this was the best take where the actors weren’t cracking up) where Wade asked his good friend Meatball if he was sure he was okay with him being his best man as he’d slept with Lilyanne. Meatball was surprised by the revelation, but said it was fine.

The wedding (groomsmen in tuxedo t-shirts, Meatball’s jacket being in camo) was rolling on eccentrically, with the groom and bride singing their vows, until Lilyanne started singing about all her exes, including George Tucker. Meatball called a halt because he hadn’t really known about all these exes and decided that maybe they didn’t know each other all that well and shouldn’t get married.

The lady officiating offered the mic to anyone else who wanted to get anything off their chest (in Bluebell? Woman, do you know what you’re doing?) Zoe decided to go up front, to say nice things about Wade and then declare her feelings for him. In public. Wade bolted. But Zoe stopped hiccoughing!

The hiccoughs would be passed on, though. AB had told Davis she needed time to think about his proposal. The town gossiped. Davis asked her again the first thing after she woke. Oh, and he revealed he had a closet full of sneakers, mostly the same ones. AB started hiccoughing.

All episode we’d seen rehearsals for Cricket and her husband’s vow renewal. They were rehearsing a dance number in the gazebo, essentially. Cricket kept getting injured because the couple were not in sync. It was claimed at one point that Brick was treating her, but basically, he wasn’t in the episode, not when, on top of Joel, we had the coward Vivian return for a scene with Wade.

Wade was having mixed feelings – usually witnessed by Joel who was a solid friend to him – as he learned more about his new job. On the one hand, he saw what he’d be earning; on the other, he learned he’d need to wear a tie, because the job would be fairly corporate, and he finally saw mock-ups of the Rammer-Jammer franchises. More importantly, perhaps, there was Zoe’s declaration. We got a glimpse of how the coward Vivian had hurt him, conditioning him to think that the timing just wasn’t right with Zoe.

Lemon was on the margins of this episode, mainly. She’d had one conversation with Lavon where they’d alluded to their past affair, while discussing whether AB would say yes to Davis. Her grandmother agreed to give her money to redo Fancie’s IF she went on that cruise with a view to getting a husband. (But what happened to pro-marriage Grandma’s husband, though?) Lemon told Zoe (while looking much better than her because Zoe had been roped in to be a cupcake bridesmaid in Cricket’s do) that she thought she’d been brave in telling Wade how she felt, even if it hadn’t worked out.

A hiccoughing Cricket stopped the wedding march to say – in a silly ‘surprise’ moment given so much has been made of how everyone has assumed her husband is gay – that she was gay. Her husband bolted. His Pilates instructor/groomsman didn’t, so presumably he’s still closeted.

By this point, I was desperate for the Wilkes wedding to go on unhindered. Although Lemon had bulldozed them into bringing the wedding forward, the couple seemed like they knew what they wanted. They rather sweetly overlapped their vows, giving Zoe a reason to believe in true love and second chances, so she tried to call Lemon to tell her as much and that she should get off the cruise. But there was no reception! There was, however, a gentleman who came up to talk to Lemon on the ship.

In intercut scenes, AB told Davis that her answer was no and he deserved better than being her rebound. In the midst of all that, she alluded to her having been Lavon’s rebound. Or I think she did.

Guru!Don Todd had driven Lavon and George (and Tom) to watch him try to get back together with his ex-wife. He failed, for she’d moved on, but he seemed happy, because he could now move on too with no regrets. This inspired Lavon to leave them hastily. A little after that, George too left for the embarkation point, to find that Lemon, on the ship, couldn’t see him. Oh, and that Lavon was there. (They’d teased it as if he could have gone back to Bluebell and AB, but not enough to shake off my certainty that it was Lemon for him. And I think Lemon/Lavon is more likely to work than Lemon/George. I’m more interested in whether they find someone for Annabeth – it might yet be George who can be sensible when he isn’t in the middle of a very silly plotline or still muddled about Lemon. For now, she was dancing with Joel. But she can’t leave Bluebell, as she’s one of its best mediators!) Lemon will probably return to Bluebell at the start of the next season with a new boyfriend who won’t last.

Zoe ended up dancing with Wade, who looked delicious all dressed up for a wedding (no tie.) Zoe was veering between too bronzed and not depending on the lighting, but her hair was nice! Like AB she looked better than she had as Cricket’s bridesmaid. He’d already informed her that he’d turned down the job and the money, but she shouldn’t read too much into it (although it was clear that she was a factor, whatever he said.) The season and episode ended on her telling him she believed in them and she was going to fight for them. Well, actually, it ended on Wade looking quite happy at the idea of being pursued by Zoe!

The abrupt reverse of the whole Wade leaving thing was pretty typical. Fake drama about whether he’d leave or not undermined! Fancy that! I was a bit miffed that there were no scenes between him and Earl, or mention of the whole him being the brother that stayed given that that was part of the character they’ve built up over three seasons.

The return of Vivian and Joel lacked tension, being about rounding things off for the season, which was better than bringing them back for the dramah when there’d be no follow through. Or bringing Jonah or Ruby back!

The crazy Bluebell and Don Todd stuff was fine, but it felt as though what was onscreen was shaped by who they could get back/who they could afford to. I know that the next series will be the last, and that it’ll be truncated. I just hope the writers knew this in time so that they could finish things off reasonably for the characters instead of with a cliffhanger.
