OUAT 2.10 - The Cricket Game (what kind of title is THAT? Not one that bowls me over, I can tell you, just drives me to terrible punning.)
Was I, like Hook, expecting Cora and him to attack Storybrooke immediately? Had they done so, I probably would have whined about the lack of character moments. What we got made sense, and felt a little more like season 1 with Emma and Swan/Mary Margaret back in Storybrooke and a megaflashback. Nice recurring use of trickery/tests/things not being as they seem, which almost takes the edge off my irritation that with Archie, dead isn’t dead. (Although didn’t Jim Robinson use a frame job that David and Ruby conveniently forgot just the other episode?) Cora’s offhand killing of someone else, never mind who, for her purposes was chilling - and sets her us as TEH MOST EEVIL so far. Our manlinered pirate did, after all, kick the transformed fish into the sea. It may just be because he has an over-developed sense of smell, but I tend to think that it is a sign that, like Rumpelstiltskin and Regina, we’re meant to see a potential redemption narrative for him.
My inkling is that the endgame for Regina is dying to save Henry.
Having said that, I did have more sympathy for Regina than I’ve had for a while. Her scenes with Emma and the frayed nerves of trying to be good when people are treating you as one would expect given the history, and Emma’s gestures for Henry, were really sympathetic. On the other hand, during the flashbacks, I had way less sympathy as her lashing out felt a bit like a temper tantrum.
Having said all that, I would love a flashback to her adopting Henry. I’ve always been intrigued by what he made of living in a town where no other children grew up.
Snow was fierce and sympathetic in giving Regina another chance. I am also confused about who was ruling which kingdom. They’d defeated King George (we will need the fuller story of that) and so Charming was Prince (except it’s by double adoption not blood, even if that’s not widely known, while Snow actually is the rightful monarch of the kingdom that Regina nicked. It wasn’t always clear which kingdom was being discussed. I presume they got united – was that feasible? And where was that palace Regina was banished to? I am afraid that this is going to be like Charming’s real name (it’s not James!) A little cartography would help clear things up!
,
Ruby was also fierce whenever she got a chance to be in Storybrooke. Loved that they emphasised her reunion with Snow, that they used her wolfy abilities – I wonder if she’d been there at the shop she’d have pointed out that canines use other senses as much as/more than sight?
PONGO, where is thy PERDITA? Will they give us an equivalent of a Tribble episode with your puppies? Or more seriously, who will look after you now that Archie is ‘gone’?
Archie is going to tell Hook about Belle, inevitably. In passing, was that her first scene with Emma and Snow?
Finally, I enjoyed the Charmings’ bonding and the adults’ learning to be parents who are also peers.
