Hart of Dixie - 4.3 The Very Good Bagel

Not a very good episode. (Almost inevitable given the title!)

It all started in a way that didn’t quite stick to continuity, with Wade now outside Zoe’s gatehouse trying to get her attention, but she’d gone to sleep at Lavon’s. Unless if they’d arranged that beforehand…no, that doesn’t make any sense. Nor does it that she had a standing invitation and Lavon had known about it… Anyway Lavon and George were witnesses to Wade’s truly dire first attempt at a conversation with Zoe about the future now that he knew about the baby.

George and Lavon were being blackmailed by Dash to keep secret the fact that they’d revealed Henry Dalton’s secret girlfriend, which meant taking part in Bluebell’s version of a Jane Austen weekend. (Just no.) Lemon, Annabeth and Cricket wanted to go stay at George’s family lakehouse and recapture their teen selves – they’d left wishes in a box there. George gave Lemon the security code and tacit permission for them to stay. Lemon didn’t really question why, because she usually gets what she wants. Except Fancie’s right now.

Poor Zoe, as more people knew she was pregnant, they kept saying increasingly unfortunate things, with even Annabeth suggesting Zoe should plan to eat the placenta, while Brick was shocked at Zoe having a child out of wedlock (er, like your current girlfriend?) Wade had to share the news with Earl, who was delighted at being a grandaddy, but then saw that his son was perturbed. He had the bright idea of Wade proposing to Zoe, and gave him his mother’s engagement ring. Aww, but also clearly a bad idea at this point. Lavon had put in a lot of effort as the reasonable friend to get Zoe to agree to a simple dinner with Wade, so when she got the whiff of a suspicion that he was going to propose, she freaked out. After all, as she’d pointed out to Brick, marrying Lemon’s mother because he’d got her pregnant hadn’t been such a great call. However much she loved Wade, which she was open about admitting, she didn’t want him to marry her just because she was pregnant!

Turned out Zoe’s freakout had taken her all the way to New York and bagels, where her mother seemed reasonable until she insisted on a party, ignoring Zoe saying it should be small, and inviting (a lot of) guests who were meant to sway Zoe into staying in New York and having her baby there. Wade found out, and talked it through with Lavon, who made the reasonable point that Wade and Zoe hadn’t had a successful dinner together recently, so his going straight to a proposal was A Bit Much. Wade conceded this, and started worrying about how long Zoe might stay in New York.

The three old friends read their wishes, got somewhat drunk and discovered after nightfall that Cricket had locked them out and they were in their swimming clothes. But Cricket still had her phone on her (in fairness, they hadn’t been swimming as much as lounging in inflatables and she was hoping for a call from her potential date) so Lemon called George and begged him to rescue them. As it meant getting out of role playing Mr Bingley with an elderly lady in an anachronistic gown (you can see why I am glossing over this), he enthusiastically agreed and Lavon tagged along.

Wade turned up at Mrs Hart’s door, having flown to New York too. She said he couldn’t see Zoe, he said that was fine as he wanted to talk to her…as it turned out it was just so that he could tell her that he was going to fight for Zoe and didn’t need her permission. Well, not to do that, but to be allowed into her place, surely. So, she made a big scene about him turning up as they had the extras, but by this time Zoe wanted out of the party, so he had that going for him.

By the lake, George had let the ladies in, Cricket and Annabeth were somehow drunker than Lemon, who had a guilty enough conscience to offer to stay with George to clear up the mess they’d made, while Lavon was going to have to drive Cricket and AB home. Cricket had remembered she’d acquired a cat (something to do with being a lesbian by Cricket logic) and needed to go back home to feed it. Cleaning up seemed to involve Lemon giving George mixed messages and insisting they go swim until she announced she was cold. They reminisced a bit – apparently that momentous weekend all those years ago was when they first hooked up, which I’m not sure tracks with what canon has said previously, and it was all ambiguous ‘you were my first love’ this, and ‘I always feel safe with you and know you’ll come through for me’ that. It didn’t seem as though Lemon was intentionally leading him on, but just seemed driven to say stuff that he could read a certain way.

Presumably, Cricket did get home to feed the cat (bad kitty mommy), but all we saw was Lavon walking AB to her door where she was having trouble with the lock. He had to sort that and his reward was her drunken admission that she’d broken up with Davis because she still wasn’t over him. She’d been awkward every time they crossed paths earlier in the episode.

Wade and Zoe got a proper talk on a ‘New York’ street (I could hear cicadas and it was clearly some other part of the set) now that it was towards the end of the episode. He managed not to put his foot in his mouth, admit that having a baby was terrifying but said that she was the love of his life. Abrupt end of scene for maximum tension.

In the lakehouse, Lemon woke up – she’d been sleeping on and equally bathrobed George on a sofa, to learn that George had realised that he wasn’t in love with her, he’d just been hearkening back to the feeling of being in love with her and a simpler life, and he had to move on. (Again. What is this, the fifth time he’s had this epiphany?) He admitted all that he had done since going to the dock, and for good measure, admitted that Lavon still had feelings for her too. That’s kind of not your secret to tell, Mr Attorney at law. Lemon was very quiet about the latter revelation.

Zoe’s mom thought that Wade sleeping on the couch was a bad sign, but it was just the couple being considerate of her. They announced that they were back together, and she was relatively okay with that. Zoe demanded bagels for breakfast, her mother complied, leaving the couple to kiss as if morning breath wasn’t a thing (see also Lemon and George having a much more chaste platonic exes kiss.)

Back in Bluebell, Lemon came across a hungover AB who remembered what she’d told Lavon, was mortified about it, but also saying she wasn’t over him. Hugs and a diagnosis of a buck-up breakfast from BFF Lemon. George admitted to Lavon what he’d realised and said to Lemon, and even told Lavon to go for it, having regained his sanity and ability to read Lemon. Except, of course, she was caught up in loyal best friend duties (as she should be.) So, when she and AB walked into the Rammer-Jammer to find the other two there, she and Lavon could only exchange pained looks.

I’ve been waiting for so long for Wade going to New York, I was a little disappointed in how that played out, although he did have two good speeches to deliver there.
