Hart of Dixie - 4.4 Red Dye #40
A very silly and camp episode, where they used dual timelines for a ‘crime’ had been committed – someone had sabotaged Shelby from winning the talent show, now with a huge prize, and the local cop was treating it as his moment to hold public interrogations. With half the town dressed in their talent show outfits. They’d shifted it to the Rammer-Jammer for Reasons, interrupting Zoe and Wade who’d been getting it on, but were now hiding in the store room at Zoe’s insistence, listening in as if it were a radio play. Wrapped in table cloths.
The mystery was mostly nonsensical, but there were a few things at play, Cricket and Whatshisname’s divorce, Cricket-AB-Lemon’s friendship being tested, with Lemon’s loyalty to AB being tested by Lavon declaring his love, oh, and Lemon’s dislike of Shelby. (Although given that Lemon has been won over to counting Zoe as a friend of sorts…) More poignantly, Wade was worried about why Zoe didn’t want them to go public (even though in private they were having excellent sex and mostly being happy.)
We kept having flashbacks to earlier in the day, when it was fairly low stakes – would someone really poison Shelby on purpose with the red dye she had a food allergy to? (Everyone’s thoughts turned to Lemon eventually, but she pointed out that she engages in psychological warfare.)
Wanda and Tom were arguing over their goat and what it would mean for their baby (what with Wanda being further along in her pregnancy than Zoe.) The Truitts had turned up, because the show thinks the brothers are more entertaining than they are. Tansy had brought them to George because they’d got in trouble with a judge, and when he heard of the prize money in the talent show, he asked if they had a talent. They could kind of sing (not as well as he could, but they just wanted him to be a manager because they’re stupid.) He did it…for Tansy, but in a ‘he’s a good guy’ way and assured her that he knew they were exes. (Again. As he’s just done again with Lemon this season. Don’t tease me with this ‘broadening my horizons’ line, give him a proper plotline.) George did get to use lawyerly skills and common sense in the whole trial in public scene.
We learned that Cricket’s ex has moved on – with a woman who I think has appeared on the show before. Cricket was confused but he just wanted them to team up for the prize money so they can get divorced now, which is what she wanted.
I was deeply unimpressed by Lavon. It was up to Lemon to turn down his offer of a gift/loan for Fancie’s, but then trying to do it by bumping up the talent show prize money as a gesture and all his emotional blackmailing was a bit much. Lemon has explained herself, and he pursued Annabeth, back when he’d decided he was over Lemon. He needs to own that, as Lemon is owning her loyalty to AB. It’d be a better sign of his love for Lemon if he listened to her and respected what she was saying rather than forced her into a difficult situation. (Lemon is still a failboat professionally, because she needed her future stepmother’s big cheque to get her dream going again. Try not burning Fancie’s down again, Lemon! Given the show’s propensity for repeating itself, it might be hard.)
It was Zoe who figured out whodunnit – Rose, by accident. Turned out Zoe was stalling on making her relationship with Wade public not out of shame, as he feared, but knowing that the town would have so many questions, and they didn’t have answers to them. Wade said the right, supportive things about how they’d figure them out, and when they faced a barrage of questions from townies, helped deflect them. Also he was shirtless for most of the episode.
The actress playing Shelby probably sang the whole of ‘All That Jazz’ just in separate bits throughout the episode. I know anaphylactic shock is pretty serious, but here Brick was on hand as soon as Shelby started suffering so she was getting treatment almost immediately.
