Craig expanded on why Tasha deserved the 10 and praised JB’s Charleston lavishly in the recap, where they were grouped top. Montell and Sarah were grouped in the middle, with a reminder that the latter had done the highest scoring rumba this series, and then the three remaining male celebs were in the bottom, getting slightly more mixed comments.

The top two were called safe, as was Sarah, which was fair enough, but suggested that the higher scoring Montell was in trouble (again). However, of the bottom triumvirate, Jamie was the first under the red light.

Up in the Clauditorium, there was much excitement, especially about the reveals of their next dances (if Sarah did know they’d be doing of-the-moment Wicked, she proved her acting chops by acting surprised and excited, while Tasha seemed too well briefed to be surprised by the reveal.) In the VT about it being musicals week next week, Sarah, JB and Chris were the best at giving it some Rex Harrisesque performance value.

The judges talked more sense than usual in their debrief, with Craig and Shirley amicably arguing over the rumba, Anton talking some sense about Montell’s shoulders, and then we got to see the judges’ reaction to Craig giving a 10 (which made up for his repeating the bit about the paddle having burned him.)

Really good group number with five guest dances, although I almost would have preferred if we’d just seen them in one couple. And if I could pick, I’d have chosen Kai and Hannah (I think she was the dancer in the wheelchair), because we have seen variations on what everyone else was doing – contemporowaft to breaking – before on the show, but utilising a wheelchair and the different heights was new. Still, as it was, it was a powerful routine, although maybe our attention was too diffused.

Second set of results: Chris was predictably safe and, (sadly for Jamie) Pete was too. (I think he should have been in the dance-off, it’s one thing people saving Chris over better dancers, but come on, now. Pete’s highest scores have been because Shirley goes funny around him. I am not as worked up and outraged as I have been in similar situations in the past, but…) And poor Montell and JoJo too. Craig made it sound like it would be close, although she had had five points more in the live show, and we know she responds well when in the dance off, while Jamie’s temperament was less well known.

Less excitement about next week being musicals week from Chris and Pete.

The Sugababes came on, and I do love them, but another medley of ye olde hits? Really? Can’t they find any new material? For once, I didn’t love the dancing, which was Latiny, and although Neil and Nancy were fierce, it didn’t really gel with the medley.

Dance-off, and again, Jamie sold his foxtrot with assurance, but equally, Montell did not drop off in quality and her quickstep was scintillating. So, although the judges praised both couples (with a blaring subtext about how Pete should have been in the dance-off), it was an unanimous decision to save her. (I could have lived with Anton following Craig and Motsi’s example and giving a reason for his choice.)

Bless him, in a first for the show, Jamie made Michelle redo the rumba for their last dance, and in a first for this series, he got hoisted up, which says something about his popularity. I think he could have done better with more rehearsal time, and arguably Michelle’s inexperience with a celeb partner told, while most of the other couples had more chemistry (not necessarily of the sizzling kind, I hasten to add.) But there has been a groundswell that the judges were too picky with Jamie, perhaps because of the potential and how high his high points were.
