1.16 The One that Got Away

My general response to Seth Rogan is ‘meh’ and my response after he seems to have been everywhere in the media advertising a movie I don’t want to see has tipped over to negative. Also, a soldier? Also, the depiction of American soldiers? I subscribe to that about as much as I subscribe to the Sleepless in Seattle love.

I laughed a bit, but I was mainly on the watch for Danny’s feels for Mindy, even if he hasn’t realised them yet. For yay! even in an ep where she listed his faults and made some up, there was plenty of shipper fodder.

But not enough laughs. Although young Mindy and Sam at Jewish camp were adorable.

1.17 (too lazy to look up the title)

I laughed more. I could get Mindy’s feelings about the surprise party that she didn’t want and the mostly unfortunate presents. But saying it out loud and WALKING OUT!? Typical of the fine line they’ve got between the character’s narcissism and issues that give her rom-com adventures while keeping her sympathetic.

I should admit that my already tired and fried brain fried a little more at the knowledge that such a thing as a giant cushion/pillow with a shirtless Chris Evens on it exists. Well done, props department.

Danny falling down the manhole was probably my biggest laugh, but then his being labelled a child came close. On the whole competing with Jeremy for Alex thing, in his corner, he was wearing much better clothes than Jeremy’s chunky grey cardigan. Jeremy may be more suave, but that cardigan was not. Also, wouldn’t Mindy have told her friend all about her sordid part with Jeremy thus making him off limits/damaged goods/unwanted? But then, Jeremy is more suave.

I was mainly confused about why they put Danny in the background, noticing Mindy’s moment with Brendan given the above. Apart from foreshadowing, which was unneccessary given what was going on even in this episode, why? Danny was chasing after Alex, partly driven by the need to compete with Jeremy. Didn’t he know there’d been a Mindy/Brendan? (I don’t remember what he’d witnessed, but all her girlfriends knew. And the food pelting was also funny. I don’t like Brendan, although that was the best gift.) Was it just the professional hatred? Or was it pointless fanservice - for as a shipper, I just think they could have dropped that and worked harder on continuity in the wide shots. Hard, I know, with about a million characters there.
