Orphan Black - episodes 1&2

Lived up to the hype for me, or enough that I’m definitely looking forward to the next episode and pretty pleased to hear there’s a second series coming (although that depends on some of the answers we get as the series goes on, I suppose).
Spoilers for ‘Natural Selection’ and ‘Instinct’
Brilliant, striking opening and then twists and turns and mysteries and cliffhangers and CLONES and found/birth family. Tatiana Maslany’s performances were amazing (no need for a pout to hide dodgy accents – ooh, she’s actually Canadian, but apart from one wobbly moment, which could have been put down to having to use so many accents, her London accent convinced me as did the guy who plays Felix’s). Sure, she used the props she had to show these variant possible versions of a person, clothes and wigs, but they’re all so distinct. And it’s fascinating to watch Sarah as a performer. I’m backing her, because she seems such a survivor. Ep 2 ended with her facing the Soccer Mom, who seems highly strung enough that I don’t like her waving weapons around and the Cleverest Clone in the Room (that’s what I’m calling her, because I didn’t take in her name), which may be a dangerous situation, but I’m still backing her. I mean, only one freak out, really, given everything she’d been through? She saw someone with her face die TWICE.
After two episodes, we’d come quite a long way, although there are so many mysteries. Why have the clones teamed up? Who’s killing them? Who created them and then let them loose in different neighbourhoods and, of course, why? Was it a social experiment? Was the German one’s illness specific to her or something that the others need to worry about also?
Related to that, until we saw that Alison from Scarborough had kids, I thought that Sarah having Keira might be significant (it’s still a possibility – should I read more into Mrs S calling her a gift?)
Where did Beth get that money from? Is hot Paul coming back? (According to imdb, yes.)
Sarah and Felix are fully realised, interesting characters. Mrs S is a more complicated character than we thought, as, Sarah discovered, Beth was. Was it the discovery of the clones or her guilt about the accidental shooting or the pills or the mental ill health that made her take the pills the reason she killed herself?
There’s always the possibility that shows like this (conspiracy shows?) throw up too many questions and mysteries that they can’t answer and have so many twists that they lack coherence, emotional or otherwise, but this is really promising and striking. (Although there are a lot of female characters, because they’re played by one actress, we see a lot more male faces than female ones – some more of the cops could have been women, but there were other diversity boxes to tick.)
