6.1 The Desert Rose
Heh, they had to make a bit more of Lisbon’s mysterious injury in the opening scene, because it followed on immediately from the previous season. It sure healed up quickly!
Still, they never remarked on how much Not!Lisbon is like Lisbon. It must have been creepy enough for her to hear someone with a voice like hers and a face like hers reading the list, never mind its content and import.
Either Jane was being really clever in the hope of riling a killer or he was distracted and arrogant. I thought that was a stupid time and place to accost the killer. So, I'll go with the second.
I wasn’t particularly impressed that it looked like we had to go through interactions with all the suspects acting suspiciously.
Jane, man, it’s healthy you told someone, and that someone had to be Lisbon. And I side with her on letting the team know, although I don’t think that even the wonder team could keep seven men under surveillance, especially when quite a few of them are dangerous psychopaths.
I love that Lisbon turned to Grace, partly because it was tech-y. And at least she asked her permission before continuing to give her all the info, although she must have known Grace wouldn’t refuse. (Jane’s influence and Lisbon being freaked enough to think this was the Right Thing To Do.)
But it was pretty inevitable that Wayne would know something was up and Cho would know something was up with him. “You’re acting weird.”...“Am I interrupting something?”
Poor Grace, dragged into Jane’s office (well, that was the implication when he dragged them into the kitchen) for a fight between the ‘rents. I thought it was six of one and half a dozen of the other, but Jane IS worried about Lisbon because she knows (except, dude, Red John knows exactly how much she and the team mean to you) and didn’t like her leaving on bad terms. Aww. Or not under his control. Or both.
And of course the team told each other.
So, the case was fun – I suspected Sonya, at least, from the second Jane talked about a séance, and the clues were all where they found the body. Pretty show, But that was a lot of green screen in the car.
And then, the stinger. I don’t know if it will turn out that Sac PD was blackballing Lisbon, but, like Jane said, Red John was going to play games. Creepy games. I was hoping she’d just find a dead body, but no. Stuff Jane not being able to cope without Lisbon, and not wanting harm to come to her – despite how important he thinks revenge is to him – what about MEEEEEEE?
In other words, you pig, Bruno Heller (who was credited with this episode). And well done, because that was pretty well written, bringing us up to speed, dancing niftily with a case of the week, and showing us a lot about the team dynamic and the Lisbon-Jane dynamic. And finishing on a truly creepy image, that made great use of this show’s defining icon.
6.2 Black-winged Redbird
This will be shorter, because I watched it live, not on the laptop and wasn't typing up my comments during the breaks.
The solution to the case of the week was pretty obvious when we'd seen the man's behaviour before he died. I didn't care about him anyway when I needed to know what had happened to Lisbon - thank goodness I didn't watch this show live so that I had to wait a week. As for the case, I got a little sarcastic about the handling of drones (although compare the show's attitude to that shown towards the military in the episode last season).
More importantly, Jane distraught by the blood on Lisbon's face, the way he wiped it off and comforted her as she woke up. (I am trying to convince myself that all we'll get off the show is an open ending that tries to placate shippers and non-shippers and Lisbon won't die.) Her nightmare was also creepy, her team and her people down. They never talked about it, but I suspect she's going to have more nightmares and her sleep may get as broken as Jane's. I was worried she was going to be hors de combat for most of the ep, but yay! she wasn't.
I am trying not to get caught up in the guessing game that Rigsby and Cho (adorable) were playing. I will say that it looked like the three men in Bertram's office were Friends of Red John's, which doesn't preclude one of them being Red John. What I'm wondering is how can this show keep up this pace with the Red John storyline. Is it going to be resolved this season and the show kept on as a procedural?
There were some flashy details in how this was shot, but I felt that there was a bit of amnesia - didn't Lisbon meet Dr Sophie (not much time for grieving over her). I wish Jane and Lisbon would countenance the idea that her office is bugged too. But then, I got really paranoid about the doctor who asked about Mrs Caramel Lee, even going as far as thinking 'that sounds a bit like carmelian'. Lots going on - I'm sure I had more to say but it's probably for the best if I finish now.
