Revenge 3.3 Confession
Slightly more than mildly interesting episode, because for most of it, I thought that things were spinning too much out of Emily’s control – despite her finding a way to get Father Paul to get Conrad to confess, and influencing him herself – especially Daniel, Charlotte and Jack plus, so it seemed, Victoria and the wildcard of Patrick were getting out of hand. And the show was dealing with the cost of her revenge to her soul by how she couldn't reach most of the people she claimed to love/care for.
I’d like to claim that I guessed that Emily was really behind Aidan’s return, but whenever Aidan was on screen I was too busy marvelling at how he’d erased himself from my memory. I literally didn’t remember the fight with Daniel (such a Grayson in this episode. I was on Margot’s side.)
Also, I don’t care about Emily/Daniel or Emily/Aiden, but despite myself Emily/Jack gets to me. That she was jealous of Margot, not over Daniel, but over Jack. That she lied to herself and him about how she manipulates/ed him, because she does care and he got that he was troubled and there’s still that connection between them (it’s partly that the actors have chemistry, but probably the part of Emily – wee!Amanda – that he can reach, that touch me). This is even if I really don’t think Emily is going to walk away having learned to forgive with Jack, Nolan, Carl (and Charlotte can come too, because I like her relationship with Jack) and live happily ever after. I’m not sure what TPTB think would be the bestest, most redemptive ending for Emily, or that she’ll get it.
But I did like Father Paul influencing her, getting her to cry tiny little sad tears and forgive (it buys the character some sympathetic time) and pointing out she shouldn’t play God.
Fancy that her plan to get Conrad to confess didn’t work. Fancy that, three episodes into the season. But I liked the close-up on Conrad as he listened to Father Paul’s face and the echo of when Victoria threw Amanda over the banister when fighting with Conrad.
I know that this means I'm one episode behind! Still to come: The Bletchley Circle and the Autobiography of Jane Eyre. Also see my offer to write meta or fic for my upcoming 10th ljversary.
