BAFTAS 2014

shallownessI get very excited about the BAFTAs because they're the only film awards I'm likely to see all the way through and Fry is entertainng (I loved that he corrected the winning writers' grammar and for using words like 'ineluctable'). Every time it got a little too Hollywood, there would be some Emma Thompson or Steve Coogan to shake it up. (Although I'm still all 'Why?' at Uma Thurman presenting an award. Was she in anything last year?)
I suppose the headlines will be about Gravity sweeping it - but it was always going to numerically with its technical excellence. I can live with Best Director for Cuaron and Best Film for 12 Years a Slave (if you can bear it, go see it, it is necessary and excellently done) and I don't know if it was overcompensation for not cheering him when Fry mentioned him in the intro, but Ewojofor got a huge reception. And it wasn't a wholesale sweeping of the board. I have Opinions about some of them, although I really shouldn't, because there was no category in which I've seen all the films. Oh, but I was chuffed for Frozen.
There were some really classy acceptance speeches, and a couple of the debutante winners were touching (although I generally roll my eyes at the Rising Star one, because the public generally vote for whoever was in the biggest movie, because they know who they are - Dane DeHaan would have had a better chance after the new Spider-Man movie - and Poulter was in that film with Aniston, not to mention The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, but there was a high quotient of bringing their mum along so that was disarming.)
And Helen Mirren, ending on Shakespeare magnificently.
Today, I hope to take a closer look at all the frocks and Jolie's outfit.
