good little soldiers?

shallownessI posted a Musketeers fic last night – ideally, I would have posted it a little sooner than fifteen minutes before the episode aired (on my journals). As it was AU (wilfully so, somewhat OOC), I wasn’t worried about jossing, per se, and one or two things that happened on the show made me feel better about my fic.
Anyway, said fic If I let you in, is a modern-day college, well, university AU as suggested by someone else's prompt, which pinged me hard. Translating them to a modern-day university setting was an interesting exercise and it allowed me to vent about Constance and d’Artagnan’s relationship within that framework, hence the fact that it's over 3,000 words. I was also enjoying writing The Musketeers fic from a female POV.
As for epiosde 1.08:
Mixed bag that didn’t end up being as good as it could have been, somehow. The good: Capaldi’s Cardinal, definitely. I also liked Porthos and Alice, I liked Charles’s softer side coming out, which worked better than in the Court of Miracles and the sense of what might have been, plus the background Porthos-Aramis banter. And some of the framing was choice.
But the build-up to the main contest was both clichéd and confusing. I kept thinking Treville and Athos were Up To Something, beyond testing D’Artagnan in their manly mentoring way, but they weren’t, really. And then the big reveal that the Cardinal’s man was Vinne Jones and that was why Treville had put himself forward and about the only reaction shot we don’t get is Athos’s? Really? After his lieutenant called Treville a glory-hunter? REALLY?
Most of that plot line seemed to be about ending up with kewl scenes with Vinnie Jones.
‘You burned down my farm, prepare to die!’ (This was the kind of episode where I found myself imagining stuff that might turn up on the blooper reel.)
I entirely understand why the Queen didn’t want to come to see it (although I suspect that was the budget.)
No, I know it was All About D’Artagnan proving himself, but as for the Constance-D’Artagnan stuff, while they’re cute like puppies, (THEIR FACES – I rather like all the actors in this) and her husband is an idiot, I refused to feel as sympathetic as the music wanted me to. Loyalty! Honour! Yeah but what about the adultery? And really, D’Artagnan should have popped back to the farm after avenging his father. Koff. But at least D’Artagnan has reached a point where he realises Milady is more than he can handle. So maybe he does deserve the patch.
Except Milady-D’Artagnan scenes are a bit of a snooze compared with Milady-Athos ones.
And of course she’s self-serving, Cardinal.
Ad for the trailer for next week: we’ll see how the Aramis/Queen playes out, but, on some level, I wish the episode featured more about secretly warrior!nuns than it's likely to, so I'll be managing expectations all weel.
