shallowness: Kira in civvies looking straight ahead (POI Zoe and John at work)
[personal profile] shallowness
I sort of felt obliged to watch this as I’d watched Page Eight, (I know I posted about watching it, but couldn’t be bothered to find the review before watching this and after a cursory search this morning, am glad I didn’t try. What is the point of having a British spy shows category of memories on livejournal if you just occasionally memorised Spooks reviews there?) All I thought I remembered of that was being unconvinced by Bill Nighy’s character being so charming and decent in a grubby world of espionage that Rachel Weisz’s character would fall for him. Here, I think HBC has replaced Weisz to play the same character, and was more convincing, especially as the couple now had more history behind them, but Nighy’s character charmed a couple of other younger women too. The text made some noises about rich white men and their entitlement, which was unintentionally amusing.

Apparently I remembered enough to recognise that Ewen Bemmer’s character had been an ally of Johnny’s (Nighy’s character) and that Ralph Fiennes, cameoing here, had played the Prime Minister. Like everyone in a scene with Rupert Graves, I assumed he was trying to find out how Sherlock faked his own death.

For it was a mainly good cast, give or take a few weak links, and Dylan Baker, in particular was so good that I felt he’d been underused. It was all pointed about the modern world, money and the rich and the things that have been done in the name of fighting the ‘good’ fight, with a few infodumps to prove that writer-director David Hare had done his research and several lines of dialogue or scenes that betrayed that he’s a playwright, being a little too showy, coming off a little too pat.

The ocean looked lovely. So did HBC playing someone normal-looking in modern dress. She’s good enough, why doesn’t she dial it down more?

I had an ‘of course’ moment when I saw that Paul Englishby did the music, which was jazz heavy.

(I was really tired when I watched it.)
