2.9 I’m tired of pretending

Oh, JULIETTE, it’s never a good sign if you disappoint Glen. (The line about him playing a paternal role made my heart clench.) It took Will to get her to really see who she’s being though (and I’m firmly of the belief that the best version of her we’ve seen around a guy is with Avery; and so little passion with Scarlett, while they both care about each other, I can’t see it being worth fighting for). The phone call to Avery and Juliette finally thinking herself special enough to stand up to Charlie and say she deserves and wants better, were added bonuses.

In between, both Juliette and Rayna wore a similar great hat.

The girl playing Maddie has such a lovely voice. Perhaps she could write a letter to both men telling them to stop being horrible, instead of having Rayna play messenger. The explanation was fair enough, and spoke to Rayna trying to work out what to do with her father, but I thought a key missing word was ‘testosterone’.

Also, Grandpa has been demoted to no. 3 in The Girls’ lives.

The hating to see Scarlett hurt rule still applies for me.

2.10 Tomorrow Never Comes

Aww, Avery and Juliette were so pleased to see each other.

How many minutes has Juliette asked for from Glen so that she can ‘talk’ to Charlie? And yet, he accepts that it was just a rumour with a straight face!

I was so pleased that Juliette stood up to Jeff and told him off for talking down his acts just before they performed (callback to his treatment of Scarlett, and Juliette is so not that green). While Rayna was drastic to call on him at home, when he says he’s not the bad guy, just the businessman ranked against artists, he rarely comes off as something more nuanced than the bad guy. And this in a show that was makig us feel sympathy for Layla, Pigs’ Blood Peggy and even Teddy and Lemar. Perhaps, though, Jeff did listen to Juliette, or at least heard the selling records part of her tirade.

And then Avery did the excellent thing onstage to bolster Juliette’s performance – great dramatic choice to have her wipe off all the make-up and continue for the next few scenes in what had to be close to bare faced for a TV drama – and I wasn’t sure when he comforted Juliette and/or when Scarlett praised him on his honesty if he realised how much he cares for Juliette, but you could see the moment the penny dropped for Juliette. And then her calling on him was very dramatic. Of course, she didn’t know about Scarlett because she hasn’t let him talk about what he’s up to, but maybe because he didn’t want to tell her or think much about Scarlett when he was with Juliette. Or maybe he did tell her and Juliette and I forgot.

Oh dear, my current favourite ship on this show is going to hurt Scarlett though. (Maybe excellent songs will come out of it.)

I do have responses to things other than Juliette’s misadventures. Like, life would be easier for Teddy and Peggy and Maddie if they realised that adults other than parents have roles in kids’ lives and yes, some authority and rights. Scarlett was entitled to be right and hurt, and what she said to Zoe was fair enough (although the way she talked down her childhood and, by extension, her family was interesting). She seems to be enjoying performing a bit more. I really liked Deacon’s put on a show in the barn/parking lot response to Teddy’s act and was so happy he could play the guitar. Rayna scouting led nowhere, but she had twenty million dollars on her mind.

And really they piled on the drama at the ending. Because I watched this in a double bill, I don’t recall whether Lemarr had the conversation with his henchman in this episode or the last – and I’d taken it to mean he’d started suspecting Tandy because she hadn’t turned up at the hearing. But those were three big what’s going to happen next? moments.
