feeling this way

I caught up on Nashville for now.
2.19 Crazy
Aww, so it turns out Luke always fancied Rayna.
FINALLY we meet Scarlett’s mother.
Yes, Juliette, this is what it feels like to be in a functional relationship with trust! I’m noting in passing that she told Charlie she loves Avery, although she hasn’t actually used that phrase to Avery, but is kinda showing it.
Poor Rayna, having to deal with Deacon vs. Teddy on top of the world hounding her daughter for a bit of teenage acting out. I might have been amused that he y’alled her. But I mostly think that Teddy is still a pig.
The second the lady suggested LA for Zoe’s career, extrinsically I wondered if she was going to go. I still think there’s dramatic mileage in having her be Scarlett/Juliette/Rayna’s backing singer, and there’s the race aspect which she brings that the show hasn’t touched. But if they’re just going to make the choice about her choosing her own career over Gunnar and their band, then she might well go. But Gunnar needs a learning curve like Avery’s before I like him as much as I did in early season 1 show. However great he's been around Will. And this depends on whether Gunnar/Scarlett is endgame, which I was so sure it was in season 1.
Hey, Scarlett’s mom, the first rule of this show is you’re not mean to Scarlett. Mental ill health or not.
More seriously, Scarlett as an abused kid, caught in a multigenerational pattern of abuse makes such a lot of sense. And whoa, her singing that song (again! Love, love, love this show’s use of reprises) to her mother was powerful, for one thing because of the way they used the close-up in the background. Even if I’m not sure that it was the wisest or healthiest way for the character to deal with what needs dealing with.
I’d also say that the flashback was maybe a little much, we got the point anyway. [I wrote that without having seen Scarlett do the same thing during her meltdown, but I still think the audience would have had the same level of horror and getting it without.]
I loved that they gave space to Daphne’s feelings for all the Maddie fallout. The callback to the (half)sisters’ song was perfect and set up nicely to me chanting ‘Daphne’ at Rayna for her little moan about how her life turned out. When she thinks about it, she’ll surely agree with Tandy that telling an alcoholic he’s about to be a daddy isn’t going to fix everything. And I would like it if they continue to address Daphne’s feelings, although I can understand why they’re giving more time to the older sister.
MIRRORS! They went all out with the expressionism for Scarlett’s mental breakdown.
I liked that Juliette was texting Maddie, and she did try to sympathise with Scarlett, except Scarlett was a lot more vulnerable than she thought.
Alas, Luke, in the perfect depiction of Rayna’s triangle at the studio wherein Deacon came through for her and Maddie, you were on the outside. I feel a little bit sorry for you now it comes to it.
Excellent clearing of the air between Rayna and Deacon. Sadly, the location takes us back to the flashback of terrible wigs.
And then, poor Scarlett...
2.20 Your Good Girl’s Going to Go Bad
Watching Scarlett in such distress was hard.
Instead of dealing with how everyone else is dealing with Scarlett’s breakdown (most of them are well meaning, but with their own blinkers, issues and guilt - what a mess) let’s go oldskool and focus on Gunnar’s avoidance of Scarlett. He was still sore over Kelly Clarkson, and much sorer with Scarlett than anyone else who refuses to fall in with his career plans. Until Jeff Fordham turned up and said ‘looney’.
I hope Gunnar burned that golf outfit.
Yay, Zoe for being a friend in the crunch. But what kind of a hospital is this that no medical staff member was taking responsibility for Scarlett’s mental health and leaving her to the mercies of untrained family and friends, some of whom were indeed projecting? It worked out okay, but it might not have.
I found Gunnar’s song much the more powerful than Rayna’s equally pointed one, partly because Gunnar seeing Scarlett’s talent first was part of their magic. And we saw him create the song in reaction to watching her meltdown. That Zoe didn’t see it as a threat was interesting. I dunno, we’ll see how Gunnar and Scarlett are around each other when next they meet.
(I preferred the singing/songs in the last episode to this one.)
Loved Scarlett getting to a place where she could face up to what had happened and make choices. Loved that Rayna was able to support her in that, even though it would be hard to admit that Highway 65 had failed in that regard.
Oh, Juliette, dude. When Avery said ‘sleep’, he meant it, and although he was insensitive in not seeing that she was working herself up over his ex...I can see why the conversation she overheard between Avery and Scarlett sounded worse to her than to me, having not witnessed Scarlett/Gunnar and Scarlett/Avery redux, the slipper months. He did, basically, put Scarlett first and by not being where Juliette expected him to be to hear her apology... you knew her reaction was going to be bad when she refused Emily’s offer to be wingman.
But just after I’d been making jokes about Jeff Fordham really needing to read some material about influencing people, seeing as he’d failed with Gunnar and Will.
Oh, Juliette, honey, no. Both on the use of sex in general and on Jeff Fordham in particular. What you saw as emotional infidelity really didn’t validate actual infidelity. And having Gunnar see it, given his past with Avery? Neat hook.
I'm optimistic/in denial about how much this is going to break them, because Avery has grown so much and this has been such a positive relationship for Juliette that, having developed over the season, I hope it isn't ruined entirely. I would accept him breaking up with her and her growing up some more as a person and him finding a place in the world where her status doesn't cause painful chips on his shoulder if they found each other again. I would sacrifice Gunnar/Scarlett (although not Scarlett finding a way to perform her music in front of an audience that is healthy for her) for it!
